About the Job
The University of Minnesota invites applications for a casual appointment as a Community Liaison with the Urban Research and Outreach-Engagement Center (UROC). This position will support the outreach and engagement efforts of UROC as directed by UROC's Executive Director. The Community Liaison (CL) positions will work with one of these five communities (Senior citizens, Hmong, Latinx, African American and Immigrant/Refugees) to introduce them to UROC and its work, create four activities that fit within UROC's areas of focus and ensure participation in the Community Advisory Committee, Community Day and Critical Conversations. UROC is a place-based center committed to positively impact in the urban core. The Community Liaisons will build trusted relationships to honor the wisdom of the community and the academy in partnership to generate community-wide practices and strategies, while building on existing community resources and assets. This is a casual appointment with up to 14 hours scheduled per week. The Community Liaisons' work will be performed in-person. Areas of Focus Include: Infrastructure Development and Support (helping shape the U's work in and for the Northside and urban core) Partnership Building with one community of focus (Senior citizens, Latinx, Hmong, African American and Immigrant/Refugee) Enhancing and Developing Skills (representing UROC in the community to build greater awareness of UROC's mission and work) JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Coordinate all activities of the UROC Community Affairs Committee (CAC) Develop strategic collaborations with organizations and residents of North Minneapolis, University offices and departments including faculty, student organizations, and community programs Implement research and outreach orientations and other learning opportunities for community and faculty Plan and implement a collaborative annual retreat for UROC and CAC Serve as a resource for UROC Signature and Affiliated programs Identify potential and new collaborations and activities Work as part of the UROC communications team to develop on-going communication strategies about research, outreach and engagement activities Ensure UROC's representation at relevant community and university events Represent UROC on assigned community and university committees (e.g., Family Day Festival, Lao New Year, Cinco de Mayo, etc.) Recruit community members from the community of focus: Senior citizens, Latinx, Hmong, African American and Immigrant/Refugee and other communities to create four UROC events a year that center on UROC's principles, mission and the current research agenda Have five representatives from the community of focus: Senior citizens, Latinx, Hmong, African American and Immigrant/Refugee attend each of these: Critical Conversations, Community Day and CAC meetings.
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of experience or combination of education and work experience to total 6 years Demonstrated committed and proven dedication to community-based work Demonstrated experience developing complex interpersonal communication aimed at supporting the needs of diverse and multicultural individuals, groups, and more specifically one of the following communities: Senior Citizen, Hmong, Latinx, African American and Immigrant/Refugees Ability to effectively initiate complex interpersonal communications with U of M staff and faculty Excellent written and verbal communications skills Demonstrated excellent public speaking skills Excellent organizational skills for event planning Computer competency with Micro Soft Office Suite and Google docs Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team, as well as independently with little supervision Must be able to lift a minimum of 50lbs Ability to work some evenings and weekends as needed. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Masters degree in Social Work or any related field Four years of full-time experience in Community based work Knowledge of the UROC culture and operating procedures are highly desired Advanced social media skills Currently working successfully with the one or more community of focus: Senior citizens, Latinx, Hmong, African American and Immigrant/Refugee Reliable Transportation HOURS: Varied, up to 14 hrs per week PAY RATE: $20/hr
