Scope of Job
The overarching goal for the Assistant Vice President (AVP) for Research Enhancement under the Division of Research is to support UTRGV’s mission to become a research-intensive university by working closely with senior leadership across the institution to sustain, enhance and expand research and scholarship through targeted initiatives and research support services. This position will design, develop, and lead programs and activities related to faculty research development and enhancement aimed at increasing individual and collective scholarly output and the overall research reputation of UTRGV. This position will strategically seek partnership at various levels outside the institution. This position will align efforts with the Division of Academic Affairs to strengthen the institution’s commitment to faculty success. This is a full-time administrative position without a faculty appointment.
Description of Duties
  • Develop programs that support faculty research, scholarship, and creative activities.
  • Serve as an adviser and liaison at the college/departmental level on faculty research development strategies, including the creation and implementation of individual faculty development plans.
  • Lead the design and implementation of faculty research development trainings to successfully develop their research portfolios and ensure coordination between the Division of Research and the Division of Academic Affairs to maximize impact while providing well-structured programs to faculty by determining topics for events that will assist faculty, including but not limited to panel discussions, grant writing workshops, and guest speaker visits.
  • Develop short and long-range plans, conceptual designs, budget requirements and documentation for assigned area.
  • Organize research development teaming opportunities.
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance in all aspects of professional development of faculty, including grant writing, proposal development, collaborative research, and research design.
  • Facilitate and manage the institutional limited submissions process.
  • Facilitate and manage seed grants programs and other strategic initiatives.
  • Facilitate and manage the periodic review of Organized Research Units.
  • Support the faculty hiring process, including faculty hiring incentives and start-up packages.
  • Provide mentorship and advice to early career faculty on topics related to extramural research, publication, and research scholarly impact.
  • Develop and monitor performance metrics related to all types of programs described above.
  • Monitor opportunities related to sponsored programs, sponsors, agencies, and potential partnerships and bring groups of faculty members and other researchers together to develop proposals.

Required Education
Master’s Degree from an accredited University.

Terminal Degree, PhD from an accredited University.

Working Conditions
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office Environment; some travel and weekend work is required. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment.

Ability to lead, plan, direct and coordinate successful research programs by working with all stakeholders.
