Position Overview

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Summary:  The City of Billings, Parks Department is seeking several Trim Mower Operators.  These are three to six month seasonal positions.  The purpose of these positions is to operate trim mowers, push mowers, and sting trimmers in the Billings City Parks.

Minimum Qualifications: Must be 18 years of age, have a valid driver’s license and good driving record. Past employment experience a plus, operating large mowers, trim mowers, string trimmers, landscaping, etc. will be given preference.   

Employment Period:  2024 summer season (3 to 6 months).

Pay Rate:  $17.50 per hour.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities:  Duties include operating profession grade mowers in multiple parks throughout Billings, maintaining professional mowers, paying attention to park equipment and pedestrians. Will also operate push mowers and weed eaters in the parks.  From time to time the position may call for assisting with weed abatement, park irrigation, and miscellaneous tasks.  

Physical Requirements:

  1. Capable of operating large mowers as a regular part of job routine.

  2. Capable of considerable walking in work areas during performance of duties.

  3. Able to perform repetitive motions for periods of 1/2 hour or longer, using various tools and implements for yard work and gardening.

  4. Able to climb relatively steep inclines and/or ladders. 

  5. Able to do frequent bending at the knees and the waist.

  6. Able to do frequent twisting or turning of the upper body.

  7. Able to use power weed trimmers and push mowers.

  8. Able to do gripping and grasping of tools for periods of 1/2 hour or longer.

  9. Lifting and carrying of items up to 50 pounds.

  10. Pushing and pulling of objects up to 150 pounds (picnic tables).

    Safety & Environment:
  11. Maintain a Safety attitude. Watching out for yourself, coworkers, and the public.

  12. Must understand your role in safety.

  13. Must wear Personal Protection Equipment when and where required.

  14. Able to work in adverse weather conditions including; rain, wind, heat, and cold.

  15. Able to work in an environment with extended exposure to the sun.

  16. Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.

     Duties & Responsibilities:
  1. Grounds Maintenance (Mowing):
    1. Before operating mower inspect it to ensure the mower is safe and ready for the day. Inspect tires, hoses, and check engine oil level. Report any safety concerns to supervisor immediately.
    2. Mow parks in assigned order.
    3. Maintain a safe distance from people, trees, and other objects.
    4. Mow only areas this mower is intended to operate in. Don’t squeeze into tight areas or mow on slopes that are unsafe to operate on.
    5. Work with the other “mowing team” members to complete park before moving on.
    6. Once completed move to next assigned park obeying all traffic laws, and being mindful of other vehicles on the road.
  1. Cleanup and Storage:
  1. Thoroughly clean mower and store in designated storage area ready for the next day.
  2. Every week blades need to be removed and sharpened. See Mechanic (Scott) for proper sharpening methods. 

Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test.
