About the Job



Job Description:
The Communications Specialist is a 100 percent, year-round civil service position within the GPS Alliance communications team. This is an entry- to mid-level generalist position that provides a range of communications support to the Vice Provost's Office and other units within the GPS Alliance. Successful candidates for this position should have a passion for writing and storytelling, and a desire to work with people from other countries and backgrounds. This position reports to the GPS Alliance communications director.

30% - Writing and Editing
Serve as the primary storyteller by identifying, writing, and disseminating stories that show the impact of the GPS Alliance and global programs in general.
Determine, write, and edit content for a range of print and electronic communication, including brochures, newsletters, annual reports, displays, websites, emails, and other publications.
Work with staff to develop communications that are effective for multilingual and multicultural audiences.

30% - Digital Communications
Develop and implement strategies for internal and external communication channels including email, websites, and social media.
Maintain consistent messaging, accurate information, and timely updates on websites; serve as liaison between content providers/clients and web development team.
Ensure websites and other digital channels are accessible to all.
Track analytics and measurements of impact from email, websites, and other channels.

25% - Communications Planning
Serve as liaison between GPS Alliance units and communications team to help identify and implement strategy for regular and appropriate communication with constituents.
Advise and assist staff in the marketing and promotion of programs/initiatives and events.
Identify appropriate metrics and measurement vehicles to determine effectiveness of communications tactics.

10% - Graphic Design
Design and create various print and electronic publications and graphics.
Ensure University graphic standards and unit branding are maintained in all communications.

5% - Professional Development Activities
Develop a strong network with communication professionals throughout the University.
Participate in University and GPS Alliance communicators' events and professional meetings.

Qualifications



Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, or related field, and two years of experience, or 6 years combined equivalent education and experience
Professional experience working or interning in the communications field
Working knowledge of the Adobe Creative Cloud

Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in a communications position at the University of Minnesota
Experience and interest in writing basic news and feature stories
Ability to balance multiple assignments and deadlines
Experience using a mass email system, preferably Salesforce Marketing Cloud
Experience maintaining and updating websites using a content management system, preferably Drupal
Familiarity with standard communications analytics and measurement tools
Familiarity with digital accessibility policies and approaches to make content accessible to all

Pay and Benefits



Pay Range: $58,292 -$67,260 annually, ($28.02- $32.33 an hour); depending on education/qualifications/experience
Time Appointment: 75%-100% Appointment
