Universities Space Research Association Scientist, Nanodevices in United States

USRA seeks a highly motivated Scientist to join the Nanodevices group. The Scientist will drive independent research projects while advancing cutting-edge instrumentation, methodologies, and providing expert user support. As part of the responsibilities, the Scientist will share research findings through publications and presentations in journals, conferences, and workshops. The Scientist will also take on leadership roles as Principal Investigator, Co-PI, Project Scientist, Instrument Scientist, or Project Lead. Additionally, the Scientist may have the responsibility to supervise and advise other technical staff, research analysts, or interns. We require demonstrable hands-on proficiency in additive manufacturing, including ink formulation, 3D printing, and technical analysis. Experience in printed functional devices including energy storage devices, semiconductors, or sensors is also required. Our group's projects are funded through a portfolio of agreements with organizations including NASA Ames Research Center.

Position Summary:

The scientist will work in a collaborative team with other scientists and engineers to directly perform research and development for both scientific and technical advancement.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Satisfy USRA's non-profit mission by making a distinctive impact through scientific and technical accomplishments in assigned projects.
  1. Directly conduct research and publish at the highest standards.

  2. Engage with academic, industrial, and government research communities through seminars, workshops, and conferences, and other activities.

  3. Maintain awareness of funding opportunities to ensure the continued growth of the group’s research capabilities.

  • Work effectively with others including functional staff, to support day-to-day operations and drive operational excellence.

  • Act safely, ethically and in compliance with all laws and regulations and USRA policies and procedures including protecting NASA and USRA intellectual property, complying with ITAR/EAR rules, and completing all required training as scheduled.

  • Lead proposals to secure research funding.

  • Present at relevant major conferences or academic institutions

  • Contribute to the development of new research and development, expertise and concepts

Additional Responsibilities

  • Protect intellectual property by submitting new technology disclosures and supporting patent applications.

  • Ensure export control compliance related to ITAR/EAR regulations

  • Support USRA Management’s efforts to maintain effective, cost-competitive, and professional business operations.

  • Complete all required trainings as scheduled.

  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

  • Engage with the university community through outreach and contribute to STEM academic curriculum development.

Required Qualifications

Education:

  • Ph.D. in the Electrical Engineering or relevant domain is required.

Experience:

  • At least 5 years of research experience in the relevant domain with international publications and/or equivalent experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • High proficiency in additive manufacturing of functional devices including energy storage devices, semiconductor nanodevices, or sensors is required.

  • Experience as a Project Investigator in printed device projects is required

  • Hands-on experience with additive manufacturing skills is required, including ink formulation, 3D printing, and characterization is required.

  • Possess excellent written and oral communication skills, and experience interacting with the media.

  • Familiarity with federal contracts and cooperative agreements.

  • Understanding of government, academic, and industrial research environments.

  • Have an impeccable reputation for excellence, integrity, and accountability.

Working Conditions:

Work will be performed in an office or computer lab environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; talk or hear. Keyboarding for large time spans each day will be a significant part of this position. The employee may need to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Travel:

Employee must be willing and able to travel. Position may require domestic and international business travel.

Universities Space Research Association (USRA) is an independent, nonprofit research corporation where the combined efforts of in-house talent and university-based expertise merge to advance aeronautics and space science and technology. The USRA Research Institute for Advanced Computer Science (RIACS) supports multiple NASA teams through USRA’s management of the NASA Academic Mission Services (NAMS) Program at NASA’s Ames Research Center. This includes support for projects with the NASA Aeronautics Research Institute (NARI), NASA Aviation Systems Division, NASA Intelligent Systems Division, and the NASA Advanced Supercomputing Division.

The hiring range displayed is specifically for those who will work in or reside in the location listed (Mt. View, CA). In extending an offer, USRA considers factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s job-related skills, experience, knowledge, internal staff equity, and relevant education/training. The hiring range for this job may be adjusted based on primary work location outside of Mt. View, California. This adjusted range will be provided to candidates by the HR Business Partner when applicable. The full time equivalent annual hiring range for this job in Mt. View, California $90,000 -$110,000.
