The primary purpose of the Research Scientist/Engineer 1 (NE S UAW RSE) is to provide the appropriate environment to support outstanding biomedical research directed towards significant human health issues and nonhuman primate health and biology.  In conjunction with our Mission Statement, these values link this position to our purpose as a Center:

    Under the general direction of the Research Support Supervisor, this position provides comprehensive research support for investigators conducting research using nonhuman primates (NHPs).  This position provides an essential function by coordinating and performing routine scientific work for research projects.  Multiple projects involving different experimental protocols and schedules are conducted concurrently.  This position requires excellent organizational skills plus the flexibility to work in an environment with constantly shifting and occasionally conflicting priorities is required.

    Expected areas of applicable skills will be in performing experimental procedures such as tissue and blood collection, administration of experimental drugs, minor surgical procedures, and assistance with major surgeries.  Attention to detail in data acquisition, correlation and presentation is also required.  High priority is placed on communication and collaboration with other teams such as BMS, husbandry, and veterinary personnel.  Frequent interaction with supervisory and investigative staff is also required.

    The ability to maintain confidentiality and use appropriate judgment in sensitive situations is necessary.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
    Research Services (50%)
  • Prepare equipment and supplies for performance of procedures requested by scientists or research groups.
  • Administer drugs to sedate animals for experimental procedures.
  • Perform routine and research specific procedures including blood draws, inoculations and biopsies according to established research project protocols and schedules.
  • Arrange for animal fasting, setting up and cleaning up, submitting appropriate paperwork, and distributing samples to required locations.
  • Set up for protocol related surgeries and necropsies. Prepare tissues for distribution.
  • Enter data of experimental procedures and drugs administered to animals on research projects into the animal medical records.
  • Perform the duties required of Essential Personnel members in the event of an emergency.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Project management activities (40%)
  • Communicate observations of animals during procedures to BMS and veterinary staff.
  • Maintain, analyze, and distribute records of blood work and details of experimental procedures to research groups.
  • Manage research projects including participation in meetings with research teams to plan details of project performance and discuss project results and future directions.
  • Assist with personnel time billing.

    Training (10%)
  • Acquire new skills to perform new animal-related techniques as required by specific project assignments. Train others as appropriate.
  • Stay current on all required training.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and one year of relevant experience, OR equivalent combination of education/experience.
  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology of nonhuman primates.
  • Experience working in an ABSL-2/3 environment.
  • Two years hands-on experience working with laboratory animals, including at least one with nonhuman primates.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work well independently and in collaboration with a diverse staff and research investigators.
  • Knowledge of animal welfare regulations, bio-safety principles, radiation safety, controlled drug regulations, and hazardous substance shipping.
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office suite of software.
  • Skilled at coordinating and managing multiple complex projects simultaneously.
  • Professional-level experience may be substituted, year-for-year, for the formal academic degree.
