Marital & Family Therapist

GENERAL PURPOSE:

To provide outpatient psychotherapy to individuals, couples, and families within the Division of Collaborative Care (Family Therapy Services/Highland Family Medicine/Women’s Health Practice) component of Psychiatry's Mental Health and Wellness Ambulatory Services; to assess, treat, and support individuals and families, and to serve as a family and network liaison and coordinator with referral sources, community resources, and professionals both within and outside the Medical Center; to provide teaching and role modeling to students and other learners within our department.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducts diagnostic assessment and intake interviews of patients and their families and designs appropriate therapeutic treatment plans with clearly defined therapeutic goals consistent with all regulations and guidelines established by the NYS Office of Mental Health, NYS Dept of Health, the Department of Psychiatry, Mental Health and Wellness, and the institution.

  • Conducts the course of individual, family, couple and systems-oriented and evidence-based psychotherapies within the accepted standards of practice as delineated by OMH and the Department, receiving clinical and administrative supervision by senior staff and/or faculty.

  • Assesses successful completion of therapeutic goals and plans termination of therapy accordingly.

  • Meets minimum target for clinical productivity set by service director and Division.

  • Engages in multidisciplinary teams and collaboration where appropriate. Refers to specialty and/or other appropriate services for evaluation and treatment as indicated, and partners around co-management of shared patients where appropriate. Establishes and regularly maintains cooperative working relationships with community and health agencies and professional and administrative staff of the Medical Center and University.

  • Completes and maintains patient charts using the electronic health record, maintains all required documentation and releases of information, care coordination summaries, patient lists, and registries where applicable.

  • Communicates with referral sources at time of referral, at initial interview, during the course of therapy and at termination through the electronic record, by telephone and/or other correspondence and/or personal appointment or face to face meeting.

  • Attends clinic staff and team meetings. Attends new staff orientation as required by the Division, Department, URMC and the Family Therapy discipline. Participates in all required Departmental and programmatic diversity trainings and professional development.

  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of, and follows, all MFT Discipline, Collaborative Care Division, and Department of Psychiatry Mental Health and Wellness Services policies and procedures, as well as those delineated by OMH. Maintainsprofessional standards and continuing education by reading, attending seminars, workshops and conferences, and staying up to date for the NYS requirements for maintenance of licensure as appropriate. Engages in annual and periodic performance review process with Program Director, supervisor, and clinical chief, where relevant, for the purposes of recognition of strengths and contributions, feedback, and continuous qualityimprovement relative to performance in the role as well as the Service needs.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy or closely related field and major course work in marriage and family theory and practice.

  • Limited permit is required. License required within 24 months of hire date.

  • Sound working knowledge of models of clinical interventions with individuals, couples, and families;

  • Knowledge about and ability to implement evidence-informed psychotherapeutic interventions, including routine psychotherapy as well as safety planning and risk assessment/risk reduction;

  • Demonstrates cultural humility and anti-racism values, and works toward ensuring all patients feel welcome;

  • Commitment to and routine demonstration of biopsychosocial approach to care of individuals and families;

  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Requires NYS licensure as Marriage and Family Therapist or limited permit eligible; if licensure has not been attained upon employment, the individual has 24 months to attain NYS license.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $57,595 - $80,600 Annually

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
