Position Description: | UNI Center for Urban Education (UNI-CUE) 5th Grade Leadership Academy is a four-week summer program that helps 24 - 5th grade students with the challenging transition from elementary to middle school. The Leadership Academy is designed to hone the skills of potential young leaders. Students participate in math, reading, writing, STEM, and leadership classes and activities, as well as a host of field trips in the community. This position will teach three 50-minute reading classes a day to middle school level students. Individual will participate in numerous program activities and field trips with program participants. Dates: June 7, 2024 to July 3, 2024 Responsibilities include develop a course syllabus; plan and prepare teaching materials; conduct class daily; assure safety of youth attending programs; work with 5th grade students on a daily basis, Monday through Friday; assist and participate in all program activities, such as field trips; and attend professional staff meetings as needed. |
Required Qualifications: | Required qualifications include experience as a Reading/English instructor or an Education major at a university; at least one year of experience working with youth, either in paid or voluntary capacity; capable of working independently without supervision; knowledgeable, open-minded, and friendly; excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be self-motivated; knowledge of safety procedures to ensure enforcement; knowledge of basic first aid; valid driver's license and a good driving record; flexible, trustworthy, and have the physical ability to fully participate in all program activities; and be accountable with a strong attendance record. |
Desirable Qualifications: | Preference will be given to candidates that are capable of driving a van to pick up six students from home to UNI-CUE every morning and back home at end of program each day and during numerous field trips. |
