SCHEDULE
Regular Full-Time Position
Must be available Sunday to Saturday at 11:00 pm to 10:00 am; rotating weekends and holidays.
Must be flexible with schedule changes to meet operational needs.
HIRING RANGE
Medical Technologist: $30.00 to $41.68 hourly (MT II starts at $34.00)
Medical Lab Technician: $26.00 to $37.09 hourly (MLT II starts at $30.00)
Actual pay commensurate with experience
Eligible for Sign-on Bonus
JOB SUMMARY
- Independently performs qualitative and quantitative tests in assigned section(s), following established guidelines and predetermined criteria.
- Performs tests and calculations, documents and reports results.
- Follows established QA/QC policies and procedures.
- Operates, calibrates, conducts performance checks and maintains laboratory instruments and equipment.
- Maintains procedures, records and logs.
- Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance and/or results and uses knowledge, deductive skills and judgment to troubleshoot and resolve them.
- Specialist: Performs duties and responsibilities only in specialized area for which individual is licensed.
Location: Queen’s Central Oahu at Wahiawa General Hospital
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs tests and calculations, documents and reports results following prescribed instructions and predetermined criteria.
- Adheres to established QA/QC policies and procedures.
- Documents all QA/QC activities.
- Implements corrective action(s) when indicated.
- Performs proficiency testing.
- Evaluates QA/QC data and proficiency testing reports, recognizes problems, and discusses resolution with supervisor.
- May perform QC reviews and follow-up steps, as assigned.
- Recognizes abnormal or unusual pre-analytical, analytical, post-analytical problems.
- Uses established corrective action policies and judgment to take appropriate follow-up actions.
- Notifies senior or supervisor as appropriate.
- Documents all corrective actions.
- Independently operates, calibrates, conducts performance checks, and maintains laboratory instruments and equipment, following written criteria.
- Maintains clean and organized work area.
- Operates and maintains equipment, such as but not limited to, pagers, computer hardware, printers, telephones, and answering machines.
- May instruct new employees and students in the performance of routine procedures, following established criteria.
- Maintains procedures, records, and logs following established procedures.
- May assist in the revision of procedures.
- Keeps abreast of medical laboratory changes, new procedures and technology developments.
- Maintains appropriate levels of supplies and reagents and places orders as needed.
- May prepare specimens and supplies for transport and/or shipping according to DLS procedures and policies, as required. Follows IATA shipping regulations as required.
- Performs the following tasks as assigned:
- Phlebotomy
- Other specimen collection
- Accessioning (data entry)
- Processing of specimens
- Forensic Toxicology: specimen collections, Breath Alcohol Testing
- Clerical activities
- MT III: Acts as a resource person (specialty expert).
- Identifies and analyzes problems; makes decisions and takes appropriate action(s).
- Assists internal and external customers with questions, concerns, problems, etc.
- Communicates relevant information to team members, supervisor, and other appropriate people in a timely and appropriate manner.
- Supports organizational performance and strategy by providing information and contributing to quality improvements, as appropriate.
- Observes all safety and health regulations and works in accordance with DLS safety policies and procedures. Reports unsafe acts/conditions and injuries to supervisor promptly.
- Maintains positive work climate and effective working relationships with internal and external customers.
- Maintains attendance as scheduled/assigned, consistent with DLS policies and procedures.
- Attends and/or participates in activities such as, but not limited to, meetings, required in-service programs, continuing education, and competency assessments.
- Models the behaviors consistent with the mission, vision, and shared values of the organization.
- Maintains confidentiality of information in accordance with company policies and procedures.
- Performs other duties as required.

Communication Demands:
- Able to read, analyze and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations, as appropriate.
- Able to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.
- Able to effectively communicate information to internal and external customers in informal settings such as one-on-one and small group situations.
Typical Physical Demands:
- Requires manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
- Requires clear vision at twenty (20) inches or less and able to identify and distinguish colors.
- Requires corrected hearing to normal range.
- Able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as, but not limited to, lab coats, gloves, face shields.
- Able to stand and walk up to four (4) hours per day continuously.
- Able to sit up to two (2) hours per day continuously.
- Able to use PC up to two (2) hours per day continuously.
- Able to perform repetitive manual motion such as, but not limited to, pipetting, capping and uncapping specimens.
- Able to bend, lift and carry supplies or equipment weighing up to thirty five (35) pounds.
Typical Working Conditions:
- Work environment includes conditions common to a hospital/laboratory environment, including working directly with potentially hazardous chemicals and/or patients with communicable diseases. Potential for inadvertent skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials.
- Generally works in an indoor, air-conditioned area.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- Medical Technologist/Specialist - Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited college or university, OR
- Medical Laboratory Technician - High school diploma or equivalent. Associate degree in a laboratory science (chemical or biological science) or medical laboratory technology from an accredited college or university and completion of a clinical laboratory internship preferred.
Experience:
- Medical Technologist I: less than two (2) years experience as an MT
- Medical Laboratory Technician I: less than two (2) years’ experience as an MLT
- Specialist (Categorical): less than two (2) years experience as a Specialist (Categorical)
- Medical Laboratory Technician II:
- Two (2) or more years of experience as an MLT with one (1) year at DLS with at least a Consistently Meets rating on last Performance Appraisal and no Corrective Action (Verbal or above) within prior year; OR
- Three (3) years relevant experience as MLT.
Certification:
Hawaii:
- Certified or licensed as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), Technologist or Specialist in the assigned/responsible laboratory discipline by an agency recognized by the Hawaii Department of Health State Laboratories Division.
- Exception: Individuals licensed as a technologist, specialist, technician by the State of Hawaii prior to the effective date of Hawaii Administration Rule 11-110 (Oct 19, 2002).
Guam:
- Certified as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) in the assigned/responsible laboratory discipline recognized by an agency recognized by the Hawaii Department of Health State Laboratories Division.
- Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) certification preferred.
Saipan:
- Certified as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Technologist or Specialist in the assigned/responsible laboratory discipline recognized by 42 CFR 493 (CLIA) preferred.
Licensure:
- Hawaii: State license as a Technologist, Specialist or Technician, as applicable.
- Positions performing bench coverage in the Blood Bank department must possess a current Hawaii State license as a Medical Technologist, unless otherwise approved by the Laboratory Director.
Skills:
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both in verbal and written form.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and with a team.
- Excellent customer service skills
Other Qualifications:
- If required to drive a company vehicle, a valid driver’s license and current acceptable traffic abstract is required.
