Job Description

Starting Pay if selected as an apprentice mechanical insulator.
Take home pay is $19 per hour after Union Dues (3.5% and benefits (total pay is $26.97). Earn as you learn. No out-of-pocket fees like community college to be an apprentice. No application fees as well. While $19/hr. may be less than what you are making the quick rises in steps (every 1000 hours) lead to a pay rise ~ every 6 months. In four years, you could make a combined wage and fringe on Federal Prevailing Wage public Work construction projects or State/City Prevailing Wage project such as schools and government building that are funded by the State (not counties). Our program will teach you everything to be a journey person or a working foreman in which case you could make higher than the prevailing wage or David Bacon wage rate. This is a job where all employees of the sponsor are members of the Union.

Where is the work?
You must be able to get to the construction project sites during the week with your own transportation - Work is from Frederick to Aberdeen into Eastern shore and south o Quantico and west to Front Royal and Harper's Ferry, WV. We try to match job locations to where you live. Training is two evenings a week in Landover, MD. (4-8 PM). If you do not have a reliable vehicle with insurance and a valid driver's license you will not be hired. It is a requirement.

Requirements:

Must be at least 18 years of age.
Must have a copy of driver's license and S.S. card with application.
Must have a copy of High School diploma or GED with application.
Must be legally permitted to work in the United States of America (documented)
Must complete application.
Must take test at time, date, and place if notified.
Must appear for interview if notified.
Must be drug free (will be tested and background checked)
Must have a copy of your DD-214 if you are a veteran and proof of your Helmets to Hardhats registration.
Be able-bodied - The work can be physically demanding. You must be fit. Heavy lifting will be encountered as well as working at extreme heights. You should not apply for this position if you are afraid of heights. Your employer is obligated to ensure a safe workplace, but it is ultimately your responsibility to be safe. You will be outdoors in the middle of the summer and the winter. Cold and heat very rarely stop the job. Most modern-day insulation materials are not considered health hazards if handled and applied properly using the manufacturer's safe practices procedures.

What do Mechanical Insulation Workers Do?
Insulation workers install and replace the materials used to insulate buildings or mechanical systems. Apply insulating materials to pipes or ductwork, or other mechanical systems to help control and maintain temperature.
Insulation workers, also called insulators, install and replace the materials used to insulate buildings and their mechanical systems. Insulators generally work indoors in residential and commercial settings. Mechanical insulators work both indoors and outdoors. They spend most of their workday standing, bending, or kneeling, often in confined spaces. Insulators typically do the following:

Remove and dispose of old insulation.
Review blueprints and specifications to determine the amount and type of insulation needed.
Measure and cut insulation to fit into walls and around pipes.
Secure insulation with staples, tape, or screws
Use air compressors to spray foam insulation.
Install plastic barriers to protect insulation from moisture.

Insulated buildings save energy by keeping heat in during the winter and out in the summer. Insulated vats, vessels, boilers, steam pipes, and water pipes prevent the loss of heat or cold and prevent burns. In addition, insulation helps reduce noise that passes through walls and ceilings.

Insulators often must remove old insulation when renovating buildings. In the past, asbestos-now known to cause cancer-was used extensively to insulate walls, ceilings, pipes, and industrial equipment. Because of this danger, hazardous materials removal workers or specially trained insulators are required to remove asbestos before workers can begin installation.
Insulators use common hand tools, such as knives and scissors. They also may use a variety of power tools, such as power saws to cut insulating materials, welders to secure clamps, staple guns to fasten insulation to walls, and air compressors to spray insulation.
Insulators sometimes wrap a cover of aluminum, sheet metal, or vapor barrier (plastic sheeting) over the insulation. Doing so protects the insulation from contact damage and keeps moisture out.

Mechanical Insulator may be approximately 10% less than plumbers and typically more than Union Carpenters. This unknown field of work is like carpentry, but the materials are lighter and most of the cutting is with knives.

What is the work Environment?
Commercial mechanical insulators generally work in unconditioned indoors environments or on roofs of buildings. Commercial Mechanical insulators work both indoors and outdoors, sometimes in extreme temperatures - it is hot in the summer and cold in the winter. They spend most of their workday standing, bending, or kneeling, often in confined spaces.

If you are accepted into the apprenticeship program, you will be required to:

Serve a probationary period of six (6) months.
Follow all guidelines, rules, and regulations set forth in the ATI's MATC Standards
Attend school at the JATC Training Facility and at the ATI Training Facility at least two days per week from 4-8 PM for up to four years. Maintain an acceptable (passing) grade average.
Report to work on a regular basis and provide your own transportation.
Submit to annual and random drug tests.
Take and pass the Journey person hands-on and written exams.
Complete all safety coursed at the BW Training LECET Training facility in Landover, MD
This is a demanding but rewarding position if you make the necessary commitments and learn all you can during your Apprenticeship. As a professional union construction worker, you will be “selling” your abilities, knowledge, performance, and work ethic. Participation in the Apprenticeship Program is a privilege that will prepare you to meet the expectations and challenges of a Union Insulator.
