About the Job
Start date of May 1, 2025 desired (but flexible), end date of August 1, 2025 firm. Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Biology is an academic research unit in the College of Food, Agriculture and Natural Sciences. Dr. Francesca Cuthbert is seeking seasonal researchers to assist with the Piping Plover Research and Recovery effort. The employee will be stationed at the University of Michigan Biological Station (housing and meals provided), and will coordinate their field research assignments with the Piping Plover Research and Recovery effort. They will be supervised by Dr. Francesca Cuthbert and Stephanie Schubel. The employee will be responsible for assisting Stephanie Schubel in the field and traveling to sites (e.g. Tawas; Silver Lake) away from UMBS to help as needed.
Responsibilities Breeding location monitoring (nest searching and monitoring, chick counts, fledge counts; banding assistance; sample collection) = 40% Interaction with government agency biologists including other monitors=5% Data entry/data communication = 10% Constructing enclosures; gear prep and maintenance = 5% Ability and willingness to walk up to 6 miles/day in variable weather = 25% Travel to sites by boat or by vehicle; responsibility for UMN vehicle = 15%
Qualifications
Required Bachelor's degree in the natural resource sciences or enrollment in an undergraduate program in natural resource sciences. Field experience with birds, preferably with piping plovers. Possess a valid driver's license. Agree to follow policy as outlined by University of Minnesota, the U.S. government and the State of Michigan. Preferred Previous experience preforming research in the field is preferred.
Pay and Benefits
Pay Range:$16.00 - $17.00 per hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience. Retirement plan options are available for Civil Service, Faculty, Labor-Represented, Professional & Administrative, and Temp Casual classifications. Learn more about retirement plans.
