Join Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital’s team of caregivers that provide top-quality patient care to the communities in and around Weston. 

As the Lead Surgical Technologist, you will monitor and direct the activities of assigned surgical technologists in the Operating Room (OR) to achieve optimum performance, efficiency and quality outcomes under supervision of the surgical manager and coordinator/assistant. You may also perform duties of surgical technologist as needed.  You will enhance and develop your skills as an experienced Surgical Technologist in a large variety of complex surgical cases in the 18-suite Operating Room Department, including but not limited to organ transplants, orthopedic, and neurosurgical cases, following established standards, department guidelines and hospital policies and procedures.  You will be responsible for peer education, advocacy, maintaining the sterile field and resources, coordinating care and enforcing standards, all while following the guidelines set by the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN).  

The hours of this full-time position are five 8-hour day shifts per week, 6:45am to 3:15pm, during the orientation period.  After orientation, other shifts could be available, including 10- or 12-hour day or evening shifts.  In addition, approximately 10 on-call shifts per month are required, covering overnight and weekend hours.  TWO YEARS OF SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST EXPERIENCE IN AN ACUTE CARE OPERATING ROOM IS REQUIRED.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides patient care in OR by performing scrub role.
  • Assists in the circulating role as needed.
  • Collaborates with SPD to maintain instruments and specialty trays. Meets required inventory and working orders.
  • Oversees surgical technologists assignments and provides direction and guidance.
  • Provides performance documentation to supervisor/manager.
  • Assumes department leadership in absence of supervisor.
  • Reviews the surgical schedule and service line shift report daily to ensure resources are available for surgical procedures.
  • Adheres to and advocates accepted practices and protocols of OR job performance standards and CMS/JACHO regulations.
  • Identifies and acts on process improvement opportunities.
  • Seeks ways to eliminate errors, reduce turnaround time, maintain work-flow and to improve customer service.
  • Performs as trouble-shooter, resolving concerns as they occur.
  • Performs and oversees precepting.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education:

  • If hired prior to August 1, 2015 completion of a Surgical Technology Program accredited through CAAHEP or ABHES or completion of military surgical technology program required. Or Licensed Practical Nurse will meet the requirements. 
  • If hired August 1, 2015 or later, Surgical Technology Program accredited through CAAHEP or ABHES required. Completion of military surgical technology program will meet the requirements of an accredited Surgical Technology Program.  Certification as a Surgical Technologist waives the educational requirement for hire. Acceptable certifications for this route are TS-C (through the National Center for Competency Training) or CST (through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting).

Certifications:

  • Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology Program receiving a Surgical Technology Certificate (STC) required.
  • Certified Surgical Technician (CST) required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association (AHA) required.

Complexity of Work:

  • Within scope of job, requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to empathize and recognize with patients suffering from physical or emotional difficulties and be sensitive to patient needs.

Work Experience:

  • Minimum of two years experience in a surgical technologist role in a surgical suite.

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires a full range of body motion including ability to lift and/or bear the weight of 100 pounds with assistance, or more while pulling, lifting, pushing and transferring patients to and from various apparatus; regularly pushes moderate to heavy weight of 100 pounds or more.
  • Exposure to body fluids.
  • Must be available for flexible scheduling according to the needs of the surgical area.
  • Floating may be expected per assignment policies within the surgical support department.
