Required Skills:
Police Officers must remain in compliance with policies, procedures, directives, and requirements of the City of Champlin, Champlin Police Department, and the Minnesota Peace Officer Standards and Training Board. Specific requirements include but are not limited to:

1. Candidates in consideration for appointment to the Champlin Police Department must meet all licensing requirements as mandated by the Minnesota Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) Board pursuant to Minnesota Statutes.
2. Meeting the licensing requirements and maintaining the license (M.S. 626.843) of Police Officers are individual responsibilities. The continuing education and training necessary to fulfill P.O.S.T. requirements must be monitored by the individual officer.
3. In the event that an officer's license expires, is suspended or revoked and he or she becomes ineligible to perform law enforcement duties, the officer will be suspended without pay pending formal resolution of the situation by the chief of police.
4. A history of crime free and dependable behavior.
5. Ability to make sound and independent decisions, in the absence of supervision, regarding appropriate police action.
6. Effective and efficient interaction with co-workers.
7. Ability to perform the essential functions and physical requirements in this section.
8. An effective knowledge of federal and state statutes and municipal ordinances as well as a current knowledge of modern police practices and procedures including the rules of arrest, evidence, and search and seizure.
9. Proficiency with firearms, intermediate weapons and all other required equipment and techniques.
10. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
11. Ability and willingness to react professionally in emergency, stressful, and dangerous situations.
12. Ability and willingness to perform strenuous activities as may be required by duty situations.
13. Possession of a valid Minnesota's driver's license.
14. Passing physical and psychological examinations as well as any physical fitness requirements as directed.
15. Knowledge of the geography of the city of Champlin and surrounding areas.

Job Description:
The Police Officers of the Champlin Police Department hold various ranks and are assigned to various positions, but all are first and foremost general Police Officers under this section. All must be able to perform the essential functions of a Police Officer. All must meet and maintain the required qualifications, and all must be able to perform the physical demands listed in this section. The ability of the department to perform its mission is directly related to the abilities of those individuals who function as Police Officers.

Opportunities for job assignments include, but are not limited to: Patrol Officer, General Investigator, Drug Task Force Detective, School Resource Officer, Traffic Enforcement Officer, Field Training, Defensive Tactics Training, Firearms Instructor, Drone Operator, Mobile Field Force, Weapons of Mass Destruction Team, Bike Patrol, Community Outreach Specialist, and more.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
The essential functions of every Police Officer are to enforce the law, keep the peace, and promote public safety. More specific functions include but are not limited to:


1. Being observant to identify breaches of the peace, law violations, unsafe situations, or calls for service; and acting upon them.
2. Enforcing federal and state statutes and local ordinances.
3. Making arrests.
4. Delivering physical force along the force continuum.
5. Safely rescuing people in danger.
6. Delivering First Aid.
7. Conducting traffic enforcement through vehicle stops and providing traffic control.
8. Applying sound investigative technique to traffic accidents, crimes, potential crimes, ordinance violations, or other situations as assigned.
9. Collecting, packaging and preserving evidence.
10. Conducting searches.
11. Providing counsel, guidance, and service to the public as a means of developing community understanding and cooperation in matters related to the public safety and law enforcement.
12. Providing assistance to fellow officers as needed.
13. Notifying appropriate personnel of situations which may require additional resources.
14. Processing information received from multiple sources including verbal, written, electronic, radio, telephone and other sources and disseminating information through the same sources.
15. Ability to travel efficiently through Champlin and surrounding areas including operating an emergency vehicle safely and effectively.
16. Providing accurate and effective testimony.
17. Preparing accurate and effective police reports.
18. Effectively deploying all necessary equipment.
19. Preparing accurate reports.
20. Testifying in court.
