The City of Walla Walla offers a comprehensive benefits package including medical, vision, and dental health insurance. NATURE OF POSITION
Perform journey-level maintenance and repairs on the City’s fleet of light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles, public safety and emergency response vehicles, grounds and road maintenance equipment, construction equipment, trailer, compressors, generators, specialty vehicle bodies, and all associated systems that support the assignments within seven departments made up of 22 divisions; execute emergency mobile and on-site maintenance procedures and inspections; utilize a fleet maintenance management system and software to complete work order data entry and to view vehicle, equipment, and historic maintenance information.
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school or equivalent and (2) two years trade school certification in automotive or diesel mechanics and (2) two years professional experience in automotive or equipment repair and maintenance; or (3) three years journeyman level experience in automotive, heavy duty truck or equipment repair and maintenance in a fleet environment including diesel, gasoline, and alternative fuel powered equipment. Valid State driver's license, and Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or ability to obtain within six months.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bilingual in Spanish.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Perform diagnostics, repairs, services, inspections, and all related activities to the City’s fleet of diesel, gas, and alternative fuel powered vehicles, equipment, and systems.
- Utilize computer and mobile device-based applications, systems, and software for all business-related communication, fleet maintenance management, payroll, and training requirements.
- Complete upfitting and in-service requirements on newly purchased vehicles and equipment such as on-board kits, decals, communication devices, specialty lighting and attachments, public safety, and emergency vehicle mission essential components, etc.
- Utilize PC-based software, specialized electronic, and mechanical testing tools to diagnose fleet related malfunctions and failures.
- Inspect, troubleshoot, adjust, replace, and repair necessary units and related parts, including engine, transmission, HVAC, suspension, steering, braking, fuel, mechanical, electrical, electronic, hydraulic, hydrostatic, pneumatic, and multiplex system components.
- Service and maintain police vehicles, fire engines, ambulances, refuse collections trucks, underground inspection/maintenance units, dump/plow trucks, service trucks, street sweepers, pavers, applicators, tractors, utility task vehicles, mowers, grounds conditioning units, rollers, dozers, graders, loaders, backhoes, and compactors.
- Repair required mission critical equipment such as data and communications equipment, lighting and siren systems, alarms, power supply, circuit/switch boards, and distributers.
- Utilize paper and electronic manuals, diagrams, schematics, and guidelines as recommended by the manufacturer to comply with the requirement to maintain each asset in the City’s fleet.
- Repair and replace vehicle and equipment tires, mount and balance tires for City fleet.
- Perform welding duties including fabrication and repair to damaged equipment as needed.
- Operate all City owned vehicles and equipment to assess performance and safety, for recovery operations, and for pre- and post-maintenance evaluations.
- Respond to emergency road and on-site calls as necessary; may be subject to call-back for emergencies or assigned 24-hour on-call.
- Complete research, purchasing and procurement requirement for maintenance and repair parts and materials, while maintaining professional communication with all fleet related manufacturers, vendors, and suppliers.
- Attend monthly safety, staff, and operational meetings.
- May serve as backup during any absence of the Fleet Services Lead.

- Techniques and practices of maintenance and repair of automotive and heavy vehicles and equipment, including maintenance services.
- Operation theory and principles of gasoline, diesel, propane engines and related apparatus.
- Methods, equipment, tools, and materials used in the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
- Read and understand diagnostic procedures for vehicles and equipment.
- Technical aspects of field specialty.
- Shop math applicable to vehicle maintenance.
- Basic record-keeping techniques and scheduling principles and practices.
- Knowledge of health and safety regulations.
- Understanding of maintenance procedures required by the National Fire Protection Association
- Ability to use technical and mechanical diagrams, schematics, and repair manuals.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
A variety of power tools and shop related equipment and machinery, such as electronic diagnostic equipment, drill presses, jacks and hoists, air conditioner recovery and recycling station, and cutting and welding equipment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Pulling, pushing, lifting and carrying heavy objects (50+ pounds) using proper lifting techniques; walking or standing for extended periods of time; bending at the waist, kneeling, reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally; climbing on, over, and under various vehicles and equipment for daily maintenance, repairs, and while on service calls; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate power tools and equipment, seeing to observe and perform repairs, and hearing and speaking to exchange information.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Vehicle and equipment repair shop environment including driving a vehicle to conduct work. Subject to seasonal heat and cold or adverse weather conditions, high-volume traffic areas, and noise extremes. On a regular basis, physical risk, and exposure to fuel station fumes, carbon monoxide, and electrical shock from power tools.
