HOURLY RATE: $24.00 per hour                       

DEPT: Sanitary Engineering

DIVISION: Wastewater Collection

SUPERVISOR: WWC Superintendent   

EMP STATUS: Full Time

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt      

CS STATUS: Classified

NORMAL WORK HOURS: 7:30 A.M. to 3:30 P.M., Monday through Friday

General Purpose of Job

This is limited skilled work in the operation and maintenance within the Wastewater Collection Division of the Allen County Sanitary Engineering Department.  Work of this class involves participation with or performance of assigned duties as directed by the Wastewater Collection Superintendent who is responsible for the operation of the wastewater collection system on an assigned shift.  This is an entry-level position requiring a considerable amount of guidance and direction from their supervisor to perform the duties and responsibilities as outlined in this job description.  An employee of this class participates with maintenance personnel and other skilled personnel in the overhaul, repair and maintenance of various types of equipment or components as associated with the wastewater collection systems.  The employee performs most of his/her tasks under immediate supervision and guidance as directed by the Wastewater Collection Superintendent.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.  Other related duties may be assigned.

85% Operations

  • Will be required to assist in the operation of the hi-velocity/vacuum sewer-cleaning units.
  • Will be required to assist in the operation of the sewer easement cleaning machine.
  • Will be required to assist in the operation of the CCTV video inspection unit.
  • Will be required to assist in the operation of GPS equipment.
  • Will be required to operate dump trucks.
  • Will be required to properly direct traffic control.
  • Will be required to assist in the repair of mainline gravity and force main sewers.
  • Will be required to assist in the repair of sanitary sewer laterals.
  • Will be required to assist in the repair of sanitary sewer manholes.
  • Will be required to assist with sanitary sewer mainline lateral taps.
  • Will be required to mow and trim grass, trim trees, reseed and grade.
  • Will be required to perform minor repairs and maintenance items to
  • building and grounds.
  • Will be required to perform custodial duties on all facilities.
  • Will assist in performing preventative and routine maintenance as defined by the equipment manuals, which will include lubrication, belt alignment and tension, coupling alignment and filter replacements.
  • Assist in minor repairs of equipment, bearing replacements, basic electrical theory and principles, capable of using amp and voltage meter.
  • Assist in basic plumbing and pipefitting jobs, exercise and repair valves.
  • Will be required to operate tri-pod retrieval system.
  • Will be required to operate atmospheric safety equipment.
  • Will be required to detect problems on the collection systems.
  • Will be required to report customer complaints to supervisor.

10% Administrative

  • May be required to answer the phone and take appropriate messages.
  • Direct calls dealing with common complaints to supervisor.
  • Will maintain accurate maintenance records on all of the above.
  • Operate computer entering and retrieving data using various software programs, etc.
  • Must be able to schedule and reschedule maintenance duties using computer maintenance program, always working with the Wastewater Collection Superintendent to set priorities.
  • Must be able to keep records and reports, as required by the Wastewater Collection Superintendent.

Education and/or Experience

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of methods, practices, tools and materials used to perform the typical tasks as outlined in this job description.
  • Basic personal computer skills.

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common technical manuals.  Ability to respond to common inquiries.  Ability to effectively present information to management. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Will be required to deal with the public in a sound and professional manner.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to calculate figures and amounts to satisfactory complete all documents required by county, state and federal agencies.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

Certificates, Licenses, Registration

Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker, Air Brakes, and Standard Transmission Endorsements as issued by the State of Ohio.

Obtain OEPA Wastewater Collection I Operators License within twenty four (24) months after employment start date.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described herein are representative of those, which must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Will be required to do prolong standing; lift up to 50 lbs; load and unload 100 lb. from truck; work in permit and non permit required confined spaces, i.e. open trenches and manholes; move 650 lb. drums with handcart; wear supplied uniform at all times; wear proper safety clothing and gear when needed; shovel snow; run 90 lb. jack hammer; dig trenches by hand; work in all climates of outdoor weather; work variable hours based upon work load and schedule; work weekends and holidays; follow the policy and procedures set forth by the Allen County Sanitary Engineering Department; be on call 24 hours a day seven days a week. Will be required to perform all job tasks using Federal, State and County safety guidelines and precautions. Will be required to respond to emergency callouts in accordance with callout policy and procedures.

All time off of work will be scheduled in accordance with the AFSCME union contract agreement.
