Great Prairie Area Education Agency works as an educational partner with public and accredited, nonpublic schools to help students, school staff, parents, and communities. Great Prairie AEA provides professional development and leadership to promote school improvement, a variety of instructional services, special education support services, and technology and media services.

We are one of nine Area Education Agencies created in 1974 by the Iowa legislature to ensure equal educational opportunities for all children from birth through age 21.  Serving school districts in the counties of Appanoose, Davis, Des Moines, Henry, Jefferson, Keokuk, Lee, Louisa, Lucas, Mahaska, Monroe, Van Buren, Wapello, and Wayne. A nine-member Board of Directors, who are selected by local school boards, oversee the operation of Great Prairie AEA. The Board sets policy and ensures that all programs and services are implemented in a manner consistent with those policies and the approved budget of the Agency.
