Educational and Experience Requirement
High school graduate or G.E.D. equivalent. Eight years of experience at a maintenance plumbing level or experience in a related field. Must be licensed as a journey level plumber by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation or must meet requirements to obtain a license immediately upon hiring. At least one year supervisory experience required. Technical/vocational training related to job duties would be helpful. Additional education may be considered in lieu of experience.
Nature & Purpose of Position
Assists the supervisor in providing supervision, coordination and leadership to employees in Plumbing, Parking, and Welding Services. Performs complex journeyperson level plumbing skills and in absence of the supervisor assumes supervisor responsibilities.
Primary Responsibilities
Assists the supervisor in all aspects of shop management including but not limited to supervision, leadership, training and development, task and project delegations, and service area coordination of all assigned employees in the Plumbing, Parking, and Welding service areas of Facilities Services. Assists with service area projects and performs duties and projects assigned by the supervisor. Uses a Computerized Maintenance Management System with work orders to allocate time, assign work and document work on a daily basis. Assists with the ordering of service area materials, tracks inventory and oversees assigned projects and timelines. Schedules work assignments. May assist the supervisor with employee relations, problems, and other employee related areas such as interviewing, evaluating, and making recommendations of applicants and present employees. Oversees service area training, both formal, informal, and on the job training (OJT). Assists with the compilation of reports. Ensures that all assigned staff follow department policies and procedures. In the absence of the supervisor assumes supervisor responsibilities. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Other Specifications
Requires proficiency in all phases of work performed. Must be able to use various types of tools of the plumbing trade including but not limited to ladders, hammers, all types of screwdrivers, ratchets, utility knives, saws, hand drills, rotary hammers, reciprocating saws, circular saws, polyvinyl chloride primer and adhesive, all types of pliers and tape measures, pipe threading equipment, copper solder and flux, open flames and torches and other equipment of the plumbing trade. Will be exposed to various weather elements, dust, dirt, heat, cold, noise, vibration, congested work area, confined spaces, overhead work and heavy lifting, working in sewage water, with lead joints, and other sewage byproducts. Climbs ladders, stairs, inclines and declines. Must be able to work with various shovels and spades, work in ditches and trenches and operate small trenchers or other plumbing equipment. Experience with a backhoe is a plus. Work occasionally includes high places, mechanical rooms, plant environments, kneeling, bending, and crawling. Uniforms and identification badges are provided by the University according to departmental policy. Must wear required uniforms and display badge.

May work hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, as scheduled. During emergencies, operational failures, and peak use periods, employee may be called in when off shift to work an extended shift, or called in during weekends and holidays. Special procedures sometimes require extended hours.

Position requires driving and operating a university vehicle, therefore, a valid Texas driver license and driving record acceptable to the University’s insurance carrier is required. Extreme care is necessary in the performance of duties to prevent injury to self and others.
