Under direction, operates the full range of heavy trucks and equipment used in the maintenance, repair, and construction of City streets, sewer lines, and other facilities; ensures adherence to safe work procedures and practices; and performs a variety of tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the full journey level class within the Equipment Operator series. Employees within this class perform the full range of duties as assigned requiring a higher degree of skill in operating the full range of heavy equipment. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. This class is distinguished from the Equipment Operator I in that the latter performs the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series requiring a lesser degree of skill in operating heavy equipment.

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

Operate the full range of heavy trucks and equipment used in the maintenance, repair, and construction of City streets, sewer lines, and other facilities.

Operate truck-mounted cranes to install and set sanitary sewer pipe, storm drain pipe, catch basins, and manholes.

Operate earth moving equipment to move dirt, rocks, sand or other materials; excavate and backfill trenches for construction; dump materials into truck.

Operate bulldozers, motor graders, heavy tractors, hydraulic excavators or backhoe attachments to excavate, level, cut, and distribute earth and move trees, rocks and other materials; raise or lower terrain to specified grade.

Operate paving machines and street maintenance equipment; spread and level hot mix paving materials on subgrade of highways or streets; observe distribution of paving material; control direction to eliminate voids at curbs and joints.

Operate video inspection equipment for inspecting sewer and storm drain lines; review video reports for possible sewer problems.

Operate snow removal and ice control equipment to maintain a safe road surface.

Operate appropriate equipment to provide assistance in flood and erosion control operations.

Perform routine and preventive maintenance and repair functions on assigned equipment to ensure safe operation.

Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures.

Perform related duties as required.

Knowledge of:
Operational characteristics of a variety of heavy trucks and maintenance and construction equipment.
Principles, practices and materials used in heavy equipment construction work.
Methods and techniques of street paving and laying of asphalt.

Education and Experience Guidelines - Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education/Training:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

Experience:
Three years of experience operating heavy equipment and trucks.

License or Certificate:
Possession of valid commercial driver's license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, flagger certification.
