BASIC PURPOSE

Reporting to the Recreation Supervisor II, the Recreation Aide III is responsible for assisting in the implementation of the athletic programs and events in the Parks, Culture and Recreation Department.

The Parks, Culture and Recreation Department serves the community by providing health, inspiration, and recreation opportunities through quality programming, facilities, and community events.  In addition, the department furthers the preservation and enhancement of the environment through planned parks, open spaces, and natural habitat areas.

Please note: This is a part-time position that will work on average up to 10-20 hours per week on a flexible schedule (including evenings and weekends).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides excellent customer service to all program participants and program visitors.
  • Complies with the City of Lacey work safety standards and procedures.
  • Under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor, assists with coaching sports activities for children 3-10 years of age.
  • Assists with greeting and directing participants and spectators at sports special events.
  • Assists in all aspects of sports special events including equipment set-up and take-down and recording results.
  • Operating independently, opens sports facilities, sets up required equipment, monitors adult and youth league activities, records results, and cleans, closes, and secures facilities.
  • Transports equipment and supplies in City vehicles.
     

QUALIFICATIONS

A High School Diploma or G.E.D. AND one year work experience as a Recreation Assistant II or equivalent.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR Certification or ability to obtain before programs begin. 
May have a combination of experience, education, and training that would substitute for the above requirements.  

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS OR LICENSE(S)  
  • Must pass a thorough background investigation and successfully complete pre-employment medical testing for the ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Must maintain a level of physical and mental fitness necessary to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without a reasonable accommodation.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Washington State driver's license and a driving record acceptable to the City and the City's insurance carrier OR must be able to provide own transportation to and from job, meetings, and related job sites. 
  • Must be attentive to job safety considerations and follows all required safety policies, procedures and techniques. 
  • Verification of identity and United States work authorization must be completed as required by the Immigration Reform and Control Act.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
 WORK ENVIRONMENT  
  • May work irregular schedule (such as weekend and evening hours) to accommodate program and event participants and maintain contact with staff.  
  • Recreation Aides are based in offices at Lacey City Hall, the Lacey Community Center, and/or the Regional Athletic Complex, and travel to and from events, programs, facilities, and locations. 
  • Recreation Aides may transport equipment and materials. 
  • Work may be physically demanding when supervising recreation activities and events, or when training or supervising staff in setting up or taking down recreational equipment and installations for events or programs.
  • Recreation Aides may be required to respond on short notice to incidents at recreation facilities, programs, and events occurring on weekends, evenings, and holidays. 
 PHYSICAL ABILITIES
  • Recreation Aides may transport equipment and materials.  
  • Work may be physically demanding when supervising activities and events or in setting up or taking down equipment and installations for events or programs.
  • Hearing, speaking or otherwise communicating to exchange information in person or on the phone.
  • Reading and understanding a variety of materials.
  • Sitting or otherwise remaining in a stationary position for extended periods of time.
  • Bending at the waist, reaching above shoulder or horizontally or otherwise positioning oneself to accomplish tasks.
  • Lifting and/or carrying or otherwise moving or transporting up to 30 lbs. (occasionally). 

 

Part-time positions that work less than 20 hours per week are not eligible for health insurance, other insurances, holidays, vacation, and/or other paid leave benefits provided to regular full-time positions; however, they are covered by Workers' Compensation Insurance.  The City will comply with RCW 49.46.210 and WAC's 296-128-600 through 296-128-700 in providing paid sick leave to all covered employees (non-exempt).

Social Security and Federal withholding taxes will be deducted from wages.

*Please note, that Part-time and On-call positions, working less than than an average of 20 hours per week, are not eligible for membership in the Department of Retirement Systems.
