Because you may often handle multiple food orders at a time, it's important that you not only cook the dishes quickly but also ensure that items on a single order ticket finish at the same time. This requires knowledge of which dishes take more time to cook and how to manage the cooking area for optimum use.
 
Job Description:
Short order cooking, in the restaurant business, is the preparation of foods that are quick to cook. The Elks small restaurant serves only short-order items, which include fried, broiled, griddled foods, as well as assembled foods like sandwiches.

Additional duties of a short-order cook may include cleaning their work area, maintaining the cooking surface and tools, filtering and disposing of frying oil, restocking and managing supplies, and ensuring proper use of foodstuffs by dating and rotating perishables kept in refrigeration.
