Job Summary:

The successful candidate will provide highly skilled technical support, and program analysis for the campus building automation systems. Responsibilities include installation and commissioning of new hardware points in existing equipment, alarm analysis and follow-up, troubleshooting network problems, and replacement of faulty components and devices. The candidate will use operator workstations, terminals, monitors, and computers to monitor the network and adjust set points as needed. He/she will operate/maintain control systems and devices, such as variable speed drives, laboratory environmental systems, chiller controls, and other systems. The candidate must perform complex troubleshooting and technical work on a journeyman level in the installation, operation, maintenance and repair of sophisticated automatic electronic, electrical, and pneumatic control systems equipment that operate heating, ventilation, air conditioning and other utility and environmental control systems. Employees are reminded that they represent both the department and the university and are expected to maintain a clean, neat and professional appearance while on duty. The candidate will routinely work with other crafts and will be required to monitor contracted work and provide training to subordinate employees. This position is considered as essential, and employees will be required to work as scheduled when University offices are closed due to emergency situations or natural disasters. These specialists work under the direct supervision of the Mechanical Manager, in the Facilities Maintenance department.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Performs journeyman level HVAC/R work in the operation, maintenance, and repair of varied types of control systems by troubleshooting, repairing and replacing inoperative parts and associated equipment
  • Ensures HVAC systems provide an appropriate living and working environment for the campus by troubleshooting, maintaining, repairing, and modifying secondary refrigerant systems including pumps, valves, cooling, air moving equipment and local temperature/pressure controls.
  • Promotes preventive maintenance by keeping accurate records and monitoring associated equipment
  • Coordinates and provides general oversight to contracted work force as required.
  • Have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office and email applications.
  • Maintain flexibility and be available for duty during short-notice or urgent situations.
  • Work cooperatively with others and maintain excellent customer service.
  • Work independently with little direction, meeting schedules and timelines. .

Key Competencies:

The successful candidate shall be knowledgeable in repairing and servicing HVAC/R and associated controls equipment. Candidate must have a working knowledge of microprocessor-based distribution control systems, analog controls, and pneumatic controls. The ability to interpret wiring diagrams, blueprints, and electrical schematics is required. The applicant should have a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office and email applications. Experience working with a Computerized Maintenance Management System is preferred. Employees are expected to lead by example, demonstrating the highest level of ethics. Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, weather, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, machinery, vibrations, traffic hazards, or toxic agents.

Physical Requirements:

Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work. Some combination of climbing and balancing, to include climbing ladders, stooping, kneeling, crawling, working at heights and working in confined spaces. May involve the lifting of moderately heavy objects, up to 45 pounds. Requires a full range of physical motion to operate manual/electrically powered tools.

Minimum Qualifications
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • An Associate Degree or completion of a formal technical training program within the field of HVAC/R, electronics or related field.
  • At least 5-years of HVAC/R or control systems experience may be accepted in lieu of a certified degree.
  • With completion of a technical training program, at least (3) years of experience in the HVAC/R, electronics or related field is required.
  • Without the completion of a formal training program, at least (5) years of direct HVAC/R or control systems experience is required.
  • A valid Texas driver’s license is required.

Certification(s) Required:

  • Certification in a technical training program within the field of HVAC/R, building controls, electronics or related field.
