Job Description

The Clinical Instructor at Southeastern Community College provides educational services as assigned, in accordance with general college guidelines, board policies and administrative guidelines. The instructor is the key to the successful accomplishment of the college’s educational goals. His/her attitude, personality, knowledge, skills and motivation contribute to the creation of an effective learning environment. Familiarity with the comprehensive community college philosophy is highly desired.

The Clinical Instructor supervises the performance of nursing students in the clinical/lab/simulation setting under the general direction of the Director of Nursing/Dean of Health Professions. This person assists the classroom instructional faculty with the translation of the theory of nursing into practice. The Clinical Instructor evaluates and make recommendations regarding student grades for the clinical experience. The Clinical Instructor position functions under the auspices of the Iowa Board of Nursing.

The Clinical Instructor will be assigned to the West Burlington and/or Keokuk campus but must have the ability and mobility to conduct clinical at various sites throughout the college district. Must be able to work on a basis of “available as work demands” in addition to a fixed schedule, which may include evenings and weekends. In addition, the individual in this position will actively promote a positive image for the college district.

Adjunct teaching contracts are subject to cancellation due to low student enrollment.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

• Must be a Registered Nurse with active and unencumbered licensure in the state of Iowa.
• Bachelor’s Degree in nursing or applicable field required or a commitment to make annual progress towards a degree in nursing at the time of hire.
• Two years of experience in clinical nursing required; three or more years preferred.
• Current BLS/CPR Certification for Healthcare Providers.
• Mandatory Reporter Certification-Adult and Child Abuse.
• Teaching experience with knowledge of course and curriculum development, instructional techniques, instructional materials, as well as knowledge of the educational processes for adult learners preferred.
• Ability to use technology and to perform work duties using relevant instructional software and integrating technology in instruction.
• Excellent communication skills (listening, speaking, writing).
• Strong human relations and interpersonal skills to interact positively and effectively with diverse populations.
• Ability to handle confidential matters with discretion and perform with a high level of personal and professional integrity and ethics.
• Must be able to work cooperatively with health officials, other agencies, faculty and students, staff, and administrators.
• Must have the ability to make effective decisions in the day-to-day clinical areas.
• Must have the adaptability to provide clinical instruction in a variety of clinical settings.
• Motivates students and encourages them to achieve to the best of their abilities.
• Effectively evaluates student performance.
• Must possess valid driver’s license and have the physical dexterity to climb stairs, walk long distances and carry heavy equipment.

Physical Demands

Good physical and mental health are required to meet the demands of clinical instruction. Proof of physical and mental fitness required before employment. Documentation of recommended vaccines for Healthcare Professionals required; Tdap, Hepatitis B vaccine series, MMR, Varicella, negative TB test and annual flu vaccine required.
