SCHEDULE

Regular Full-Time Position

Must be available Monday through Friday 4:00am - 8:30pm, Saturday 5:00am - 1:00pm, and Sunday 9:00am - 1:00pm. 
Must be flexible with schedule changes to meet operational needs.

 

HIRING RANGE

$36.00 to $43.72 hourly

Actual pay commensurate with experience

Eligible for Sign-on Bonus

 

JOB SUMMARY

Performs the day to day supervision of staff and routine operations for assigned area, under the direction of supervisor.  Assists supervisor with activities to support the company mission, vision and strategic goals.  Represents management and the company.  Specialist:  Assigned area is restricted to specialty for which individual is licensed.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Performs duties of Medical Technologist/Laboratory Technician, as required.
  2. May perform phlebotomy as needed.
  3. Assists supervisor to ensure operations of assigned area(s) meet company requirements and customer service goals.
    1. Assists supervisor/manager in setting departmental standards of quality, productivity, performance and developing and implementing monitoring systems, as assigned.
    2. Performs scheduling and work assignments according to operational requirements.
    3. Participates in preparation and updating of procedures and other departmental manuals.
    4. Communicates relevant information to team members, supervisor, and other appropriate people in a timely and appropriate manner.
    5. Investigates and addresses incidents involving patients, employees, clients, visitors.
      1. Handles situations using appropriate company policy or procedure.
      2. Consults supervisor or other appropriate resource.
    6. Assists internal and external customers with questions, concerns, problems, etc.
    7. Ensures the proper and efficient use of supplies and equipment.
    8. Interfaces with clients and patients and provides feedback to Marketing staff or supervisor.
  4. Assists supervisor to ensure assigned area(s) meet state, federal, and other regulatory requirements.

 

  1. May implement and maintain quality control/assurance programs as required.
  2. May serve as General Supervisor, Technical Consultant and/or Technical Supervisor to meet CLIA requirements. Refer to Laboratory Personnel and Licensure Requirements policy (QI-11-PER-01) for performance assessment and regulatory responsibilities.

  2. Participates in hiring, training, developing and appraising staff and makes recommendations as appropriate.

  7. Satellites and Guam
  1. Maintains assigned site(s) to project a professional, quality image to clients and patients.
  2. If courier or shipping function exists at assigned site(s), provides direction and monitors performance of applicable personnel.
  1. QMC Punchbowl Blood Bank
  1. May oversee Perioperative services and ensure compliance with regulatory and accrediting agencies.
  • Provides on-going education and training and keeps abreast of changes to procedures, policies and equipment.
  • Serves as a liaison between QMC and accrediting/regulatory agencies.
  • Works with Anesthesiologist, anesthesia techs, transplant nurses, OR Manager for changes in procedures and policies or equipment. Attends morning huddles prior to procedures as needed.
  • Works with anesthesia tech to collect and run QC samples from cellsavers
  • Works with Tissue Bank nurse and monitors temperature charts and variance reports.
  • Ensures that competency assessments are completed and documented.
  • Provide statistical data on perioperative procedures and tissue banking implantations for quarterly Blood Utilization Committee meetings.
  • Works with OR Biomed technician assigned to perioperative to ensure equipment maintenance, validation and initial training records are documented and available for review.
  1. May perform other data collection and reporting duties.
  • Collects statistics from Punchbowl and other blood banks and prepare PowerPoint presentation for pathologist on a quarterly basis.
  • Collects and analyzes blood bank transfusion data from Carelink reports on an ad-hoc basis.

Typical Physical Demands

  • Requires manual and finger dexterity, eye-hand coordination, and corrected vision and hearing to normal ranges.   Distinguishes and identifies color.
  • Requires standing for moderate periods of time.
  • Requires occasional lifting and carrying of supplies weighing up to 35 pounds.
  • Requires wearing of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as, but not limited to, gloves, face shields, lab coats, and respiratory equipment.
  • May require intermittent keying up to 8 hours a day.
  • May require regular ground and/or air travel.

Typical Working Demands:

  • Work environment includes conditions common to a hospital/laboratory environment, including working directly with potentially hazardous chemicals and/or patients with communicable diseases.  Potential for inadvertent skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials possible.
  • Generally works in an indoor, air-conditioned area.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or related science and successful completion of training in an approved School of Medical Technology, OR
  • Bachelor's degree, relevant training, and comparable work experience; OR
  • Associate degree from an accredited School of Clinical Laboratory Sciences and completion of an approved clinical laboratory internship.
  • Additional requirements may be needed for those serving as General Supervisor, Technical Consultant or Technical Supervisor to meet CLIA requirements.

Experience:

  • Four (4) years as an MLT, or two (2) years as an MLT plus one (1) year of supervisory experience, with continuing education in one or more disciplines within the laboratory; OR
  • Three (3) years as a Medical Technologist/Specialist, or two (2) years as an MT/Specialist plus one (1) year of supervisory experience, with continuing education in one or more disciplines within the laboratory.
  • As applicable: Two years of laboratory training and/or experience in high complexity    testing in the designated specialty(ies) of service for which the person is responsible and 6 months of experience in high complexity testing for the designated subspecialty(ies) of service
     

Certification:

Hawaii:

    • Certified or licensed as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), Technologist or Specialist in the assigned/responsible laboratory discipline by an agency recognized by the Hawaii Department of Health State Laboratories Division.

Guam:

    • Certified as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) in the assigned/responsible laboratory discipline recognized by an agency recognized by the Hawaii Department of Health State Laboratories Division.
    • Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) certification preferred.

Saipan:

    • Certified as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Technologist or Specialist in the assigned/responsible laboratory discipline recognized by 42 CFR 493 (CLIA) preferred.

Licensure:

  • Hawaii: State license as a Technologist, Specialist, or Technician, as appropriate.

Skills:

  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both in verbal and written form.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and with a team.
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Effective coaching skills.
  • Basic ability to operate personal computer. (Ex: turn of/off, open/close applications, use mouse and keyboard.)

Other Qualifications (as applicable):

  • Must possess a valid State of Hawaii (or equivalent) motor vehicle license and a current acceptable traffic abstract.
  • Positions performing bench coverage in the Blood Bank department must possess a current Hawaii State license as a Medical Technologist unless otherwise approved by the Laboratory Director.
