Intern Responsibilities / Projects: 

The Chronic Disease Registry Linking Electronic Health Record Data (CHRONICLE) is an automated, near-real-time surveillance system designed to link information from electronic health records on diagnosed hypertension and stroke events with other data sources within MDHHS and other State of Michigan agencies to support longitudinal chronic disease surveillance statewide. The Chronic Disease Surveillance and Epidemiology Graduate Intern will assist Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Chronicle staff in conducting chronic disease surveillance to guide, support and evaluate Chronicle. 


Major projects could include:

-Reconcile duplicate records supporting system and data monitoring in the Chronicle system

-Conduct ad-hoc data analyses that support Chronicle quality improvement or other data strategies
-Prepare and publish reports of surveillance analyses in the form of interactive dashboards, maps, fact sheets, surveillance reports and updates to website statistics
 -Introduction to the duties and responsibilities of state chronic disease epidemiologists



This position is hybrid and may include some on site interaction at MDHHS, with oversight and supervision provided by MDHHS Chronic Disease Epidemiology Section Manager. 




Timeline: The internship would be a maximum of 29 hours per week starting in May/June.

Required Education and Experience

Possession of a Bachelor’s degree and concurrent enrollment in a Master of Public Health or equivalent program Public Health/ Epidemiology.  


Hours: 

 up 29 hours a week 



Materials: The intern will be provided necessary resources, materials, and access to ensure acclimation to the role. A computer with VPN access will be provided to the employee upon assignment.

Alternate Education and Experience

Experience:   Course work in epidemiology and biostatistics is preferred but not required. Experience with a statistical software package, such as SAS and SPSS, is preferred but not required.   


Important Skills and Characteristics:  Excellent oral and written communications skills. Able to work well in team situations. Self-motivated and able to complete work in timely manner with minimal supervision. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and familiarity with email/internet.
