Overview

Highway Project Engineer is responsible for supporting a project team in a variety of tasks including roadway alignments, guide rail and drainage design,  maintenance of traffic design, signing and pavement marking plans, and preparation of construction plans, specifications, and cost estimates. Project assignments can range from intersection improvements and bridge replacements to complex interchange and corridor projects. Experience with PennDOT and/or PTC policies, standards, and specifications preferred.

Duties, Responsibilities & Other

A design leader in the development of plans for transportation/roadway projects, providing guidance and supervision to junior engineers.
Coordinates with project managers while planning scheduling and coordinating design phase tasks related to project scope and deliverables.
Responsible for quality control, checking computations while reviewing design work and engineering drawings performed by others.
Analyze and address technical problems, which may involve conventional engineering practice, but also may require innovative solutions with unique approaches.
Candidate must have worked on all phases of design and have been involved in industry related services of a project.
Broad knowledge of current design policies/practices and the ability to effectively apply the knowledge to the design process.
Candidate must be reliable, committed to completing multiple task, have strong time management skills, and the willingness to mentor staff
Solid understanding of and experience utilizing CADD software MicroStation or AutoCAD/Civil 3D is required.  Working knowledge of OpenRoads Designer is preferred.
Good problem solving, communication, and technical writing skills are required.
Understanding of complex roadway geometry, intersection designs, and ADA standards.
Ability to read and interpret design standards and specifications and make engineering decisions.
PE Required


Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Engineering; Appropriate graduate level work is preferred.
Minimum of 5 - 9 years of professional experience.
Pre-employment drug screening is a condition of employment. Background and motor vehicle checks may be required based upon position.


Performance Expectations

Submit for approval and deliver timely annual Employee Performance Appraisals for assigned staff
Train adequate backup personnel to support your role in your absence
Comply with all KCI policies and procedures
Ensure projects fulfill ISO compliance requirements
Manage work routine of all assigned staff and assign job activities as required
Complete other duties as required/assigned
Achieve or exceed budgeted individual utilization target(75%-80% typical)
Attend bi-weekly(or more frequently as necessary) meetings with project team on all projects/tasks
Chart and provide task performance results
Complete all tasks on time and within budget while fully meeting the scope
Consult and coordinate with other practices and sub-consultants as required
Operate within specified (corporate or project) budget parameters
Prepare interpractice agreements and/or outside requests as required
Provide technical project and staff oversight
Serve as task manager on select projects
Compare field data to base plan
Conduct site visits and gather data, including measurements, sketches, notes and photographs as needed
Prepare design calculations, drawings, specifications and cost estimates for review and approval
Prepare preliminary concept designs and submit for approval
Read and interpret technical documents needed for performance of job
Review and approve shop drawings
Complete Annual Individual Training Program
