Pediatric Hematology Oncology/Palliative Care Faculty Position

 

Cleveland Clinic, one of the world’s most distinguished academic medical centers, announces a search for a lead physician to develop oncology palliative and supportive care program collaboration between Pediatric Hematology-Oncology, Pediatric Palliative Care and Adult Palliative care teams. This position provides the opportunity to work in a highly engaging and collaborative environment with the support and resources of the Cleveland Clinic Children’s Institute and Taussig Cancer Institute to provide the best care for our pediatric and young adult patients.

 

The selected candidate will join a vibrant and growing program that currently includes 16 Pediatric Hematologist-Oncologists, 2 PhD providers, 10 nurse practitioners and dedicated disease-based care coordinators and psychosocial team including a pediatric certified death doula, providing care to more than 10,000 patient visits per year. The division of pediatric hematology-oncology has grown over the past few years due to many programs, including but limited to, FACT accredited Blood and Marrow Transplantation, immune-hematology, thrombosis and vascular malformations, neuro-oncology program. sarcoma program and AYA programs which offer innovative care delivery and clinical trials through COG, NEXT consortium, NAPAAC, NICER consortium, Sunrise consortium, Beat Childhood Cancer consortium and Sickle Cell Disease Alliance.

 

The selected candidate will work with the Pediatric Palliative care team led by Dr. Christine Traul and consists of 2 Physicians, 2 nurse practitioners, and a social worker. Responsibilities include development of palliative and supportive care program to provide clinical care of patient with blood and cancer disorders in multiple care settings. This includes inpatient, outpatient clinic, and outside hospitals housing pediatric patients. The selected candidate will have a joint appointment with adult palliative care and enjoy the camaraderie, collaboration, and educational and academic benefits of an established, thriving adult palliative medicine department under the leadership of Dr. Laura Shoemaker, consisting of over 30 specialty palliative care physicians, 20 advanced practice nurses, and 10 palliative social workers.  Engagement with the physician fellowship program is welcome. There is also collaboration with multiple outside home Hospice agencies who provide ongoing care to our patients along the trajectory of their hematology-oncology illness. Education and training of Adult Palliative Medicine Fellows, other specialty fellows (Peds Neurology), pediatric residents, and medical students is a priority. A commitment to interdisciplinary teamwork and collaboration, high quality pediatric palliative care, and outstanding communication skills are essential. The division has a very well established ACGME accredited Hematology Oncology fellowship program. Additionally, the department is part of the Children’s Institute, and works in close collaboration with Cleveland Clinic’s Taussig Cancer Institute and the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center. The candidate should be board certified or board eligible in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology and Hospice and palliative medicine. A faculty appointment at a rank commensurate with academic accomplishments is expected at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University. Eligibility for medical licensure in Ohio is required. Generous research opportunities are available within the Lerner Research Institute.
