BASIC PURPOSE

Reporting to the Water Resources Specialist, under general supervision, the Water Resources Assistant/Educator assists the Water Resources Division with education and outreach activities.   

Hours of work are generally between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., but also includes occasional evening and weekend work.  Schedule is flexible, although work is limited to 16 hours per week.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

These duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Develops educational activities for school groups, teachers, and public events.
  • Facilitates community service projects for school and community groups.
  • Coordinates and leads field trips for school and community groups.
  • Educates the public about local programs at outreach events.
  • Assists in the coordination of activities of several regional environmental education and outreach groups of which the City participates, which include the Thurston County Stream Team, South Sound GREEN, the Thurston County Stormwater Outreach Group, and the Thurston ECO Network.
  • Attends surface and ground water quality sampling events with department staff to gain training and experience in understanding local water quality conditions.
  • Distributes water conservation items.
  • Performs data entry.

QUALIFICATIONS

A Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Education, Public Speaking, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Geology, Water Resources, Biology, Policy, Statistics, other Physical or Earth Sciences.                                                                                                                                            

OR

An Associate’s Degree and two years of college level work in Environmental Education, Public Speaking, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Geology, Water Resources, Biology, Policy, Statistics, other Physical or Earth Sciences, or a related field.           

OR 

A HS Diploma or G.E.D and four years of college level work in Environmental Education, Public Speaking, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Geology, Water Resources, Biology, Policy, Statistics, other Physical or Earth Sciences.

A combination of experience and college level course work in Environmental Education, Public Speaking, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Geology, Water Resources, Biology, Policy, Statistics, other Physical or Earth Sciences will also substitute for the above.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Study in the area of Environmental Education, Public Speaking, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Geology, Water Resources, Biology, Policy, Statistics, other Physical or Earth Sciences

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS OR LICENSE(S):

  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
  • Must have a valid Washington state driver's license and a driving record acceptable to the City's insurance carrier OR must be able to provide own transportation to and from job, other areas of the City, and to meetings.
  • Must maintain a level of physical and mental fitness necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Must pass a background investigation.
  • Verification of identity and United States work authorization must be complete as required by the Immigration Reform and Control Act. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of: 

  • Environmental Education, Public Speaking, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Geology, Water Resources, Biology, Policy, Statistics, other Physical or Earth Sciences

 Skill in:

  • Public outreach, public speaking, and environmental education.
  • Coordinating volunteer projects and guiding youth.
  • Word processing, database, and spreadsheet skills.
  • Communicating, organizing, scheduling and time management.

 Ability to:

  • Be detail oriented.
  • Work independently.
  • Lift up to 50 lbs., move wheelbarrows over uneven terrain, dig holes, plant trees, and work in and along streams.
  • Work out doors in inclement weather.

Part-time positions that work less than 20 hours per week are not eligible for health insurance, other insurances, holidays, vacation, and/or other paid leave benefits provided to regular full-time positions; however, they are covered by Workers' Compensation Insurance.  The City will comply with RCW 49.46.210 and WAC's 296-128-600 through 296-128-700 in providing paid sick leave to all covered employees (non-exempt).

Social Security and Federal withholding taxes will be deducted from wages.

*Please note, that Part-time and On-call positions, working less than than an average of 20 hours per week, are not eligible for membership in the Department of Retirement Systems.
