Nursing Assistant Training Program

Job Description:

Position Summary:

Lahey Hospital & Medical Center’s (LHMC) Nursing Education department has developed this curriculum to teach acute care skills to individuals with no prior experience.

Nursing Assistants (NA) work on inpatient floors and primarily work with nurses supporting patients’ individual needs. While assisting patients with activities of daily living, NAs will be taking blood sugars and blood pressures as well as other supportive tasks, such as taking EKGs and reporting any changes in patient’s condition to the RN and members of the health care team.

Program Overview:

LHMC staff teach the curriculum over three weeks. Participants must be available for the in-person training from June 3rd - June 21st.

The three-week training program will require a full-time commitment and include a combination of classroom and skills training. Applicants will also receive hands-on training with a clinical instructor on an inpatient medical-surgical unit, and will work hands-on alongside a dedicated preceptor on their assigned medical –surgical unit.

Prior to starting, we will discuss which areas, hours and shifts you may have interest in (if any). We will then place you in an open position on one of our Medical Surgical Floors, where you will begin the training program.

After completing the three-week training course, applicants will further their training on their assigned unit until they have successfully completed orientation.

Selected applicants will start June 3, 2024.

Required Training Hours:

Week 1- 40 hours

Week 2- 40 hours

Week 3- 40 hours

Minimum Eligibility Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED

  • Availability to work flexible shifts that include day, night and evening shifts, every other weekend, and some holidays

  • Enjoy challenges and being a part of a team

  • Have compassion and empathy for others

  • Be highly motivated and set high standards for self

  • Possess excellent customer service, computer navigation and communication skills

  • Have strong attention to detail

  • Have the physical ability to lift, transfer, and turn patients

Organizational Requirements:

  • Incorporates Lahey Clinic Guiding Principles, Mission Statement and Goals into daily activities.

  • Complies with all Lahey Clinic Policies.

  • Complies with behavioral expectations of the department and Lahey Clinic.

  • Maintains courteous and effective interactions with colleagues and patients.

  • Demonstrates an understanding of the job description, performance expectations, and competency assessment.

  • Demonstrates a commitment toward meeting and exceeding the needs of our customers and consistently adheres to Customer Service standards.

  • Participates in departmental and/or interdepartmental quality improvement activities.

  • Participates in and successfully completes Mandatory Education.

  • Performs all other duties as needed or directed to meet the needs of the department.
