Grounds Equipment Operator
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is an important parks maintenance position involving the upkeep of park facilities including lawns, turfgrass, trees, shrubs, flowerbeds, trails, pedestrian pathways, athletic fields, courts, pavilions, lodges and general park areas. This employee will operate motorized grounds equipment, including 1-ton trucks while tending to the park areas. Work involves manual labor and is performed under various weather conditions including extremes of heat and cold, humidity or inclement weather conditions. The Grounds Equipment Operator works under general supervision from and reports directly to the Superintendent of Parks. Direct supervision may be exercised over part-time and seasonal laborers. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Cleans shelters, lodges, restrooms, parks and related support facilities.
Trail maintenance, facility maintenance.
Mows lawns and trims around walks, flowerbeds, walls, fences, hedges, trees and shrubs.
Maintains public park space.
Plants, waters, fertilizes and weeds grass, flowers, trees and shrubs.
Rakes leaves, picks up brush and litter.
Assists with various recreational set ups and special events.
Plows, shovels and salts walkways, steps, driveways and crossings.
Repairs and paints fences, gates, walls, tables, benches, pavilions and lodges.
Installs and inspects playground, parks and athletic equipment.
Maintains athletic fields and courts.
Cleans out gutters, drainage ditches, culverts and catch basins.
Operates manual power tools and equipment.
Operates up to 1 ton pick up trucks to deliver supplies, cart debris and materials and load and unload materials.
Operates a variety of tractors, skid steers, field painters, turf equipment and similar park equipment.
Performs minor preventative maintenance tasks on grounds equipment or vehicles.
Layout, mark and re-line athletic fields for a variety of youth and adult athletics.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: There are no education or experience qualifications for this position.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Class *D* Operators license issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles at time of appointment.
