Senior Research Associate

This technical position will serve as a cardiovascular physiologist for investigators within the Center for Cardiovascular Research at NCH. The candidate should have experience in in vivo/ex vivo cardiovascular physiology and be willing to develop and learn new experimental methods. Experience with rodent models, small animal echocardiography and small animal surgery is required. The duties include, but are not limited to designing/performing complex experimental procedures that include in vivo/ex vivo techniques (e.g. echocardiography, pressure-volume loops, invasive catheterization, telemetry, blood flow measurements, drug treatments, animal husbandry), and assisting in the interpretation of results. Additional duties will include database management of cardiovascular physiology studies and potentially assisting with advanced small animal cardiac imaging (CT/MRI). Experience with translational research methods is also desired, but not required. The successful candidate will possess an exceptional work ethic and be expected to independently and proficiently complete experiments and data analysis. The detail-oriented candidate will be proficient in organizing and maintaining laboratory records related to cardiovascular physiology studies; he/she will assist in the preparation of scientific publications and research grant proposals when necessary. The candidate will be expected to supervise and teach students and staff techniques and experimental procedures and will be required to participate in the preparation/organization of supplies/reagents, ordering supplies, maintaining the laboratory, and recording/analyzing research results.

Responsibilities




PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Conducts independent research studies and laboratory analysis in a specific area agreed upon in conjunction with the Principal Investigator and the Director of the Center for Cardiovascular Research at NCH.
Sets up research experiments through appropriate hospital and research institute procedures.
Collects and analyzes data in accordance with appropriate statistical procedures, and prepares reports, inclusive of graphs, tables, and photographs, of the results of studies.
Collaborates and interacts with other researchers doing similar studies at NCH and at other research institutions.
Assists in the preparation of scientific publications and grant proposals with regard to a specific area of research.
Attends scientific conferences and gives scientific presentations. Serves as a resource person for other investigators and as a mentor to less experienced research personnel.
Prepares budget proposals for supplies and equipment needed to conduct research. Monitors study expenditures to assure that budgetary constraints are followed.
Performs miscellaneous related duties as required

Qualifications




KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

Master's degree, DVM, or PhD is strongly Preferred with one-two years of cardiovascular imaging and/or surgery experience required
Organizational Skills or Bachelor of Science degree with two to three years of laboratory research experience.
Must be able to use research methods in generating and collecting data and analyzing the data for report preparation.
Basic molecular biology and cell biology skills desired, but not required.
Basic exposure to clinical/translational research methods are desired, but not required.
Must be proficient in both written and spoken English.
