HBK Engineering is seeking a Project Manager to manage electric projects (transmission, substation, or distribution) and gas projects (transmission, distribution, gate stations, or plant). This position offers the opportunity to lead a project team consisting of engineers, designers, and field personnel involved in the design, modification, analysis, and constructability of new and existing utility systems, and even extending into the construction and close-out phases of projects.

The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to: 

  • Provide overarching management of projects from concept to completion.  This includes planning, estimating, siting, environmental, permitting, engineering, specifying equipment, procurement and materials acquisition, construction management, and project close-out.
  • Develop, adjust, and monitor schedules, manage project scope, manage project costs through standardized budgeting and forecasting techniques, and management of commercial changes as necessary.
  • Prepare and review proposals, contracts, and cost estimates prior to submittal to the client. 
  • Work on challenging assignments that include investigating, troubleshooting, and resolving a wide variety of challenges, whether they be engineering, project management, or construction related issues.
  • Act as a team lead in the coordination of detailed design phases for all aspects of utility engineering work.
  • Negotiate revisions, changes and additions to contractual agreements with sub-consultants, and clients.
  • Lead efforts to ensure projects are performed consistent with contract terms.
  • Coordinate design activities to ensure installation and operations will comply with specifications, codes, and client requirements.
  • Prepare reports and studies that present technical information in a clear and concise manner and will exceed client expectations.
  • Perform independent reviews of work performed by others including calculations and drawing preparation.
  • Local travel required up to 20%, or as needed.

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering Degree required from ABET accredited institution, or equivalent.
  • 4-10 years of experience performing project management tasks and managing project controls.

Essential Skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is required.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Project or other scheduling software is required.
  • Ability to read and understand electrical schematics, structural drawings, and other associated technical documentation.
  • Familiarity with alternate project structures such as Design-Bid-Build, EPC, Design-build, etc.
  • Understanding of typical project lifecycle, ability to prioritize and direct project tasks, management of critical path activities, and ability to effectively mitigate project risk.
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Must be able to work in a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Exposure to or experience performing field services related to construction, construction management, and/or surveying of electric or gas utility infrastructure.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, MicroStation, or other appropriate CAD software.
  • Professional Engineering License with the ability to get reciprocity in MD and other states or DC.
  • Experience leading and mentoring less experienced staff.
  • Utility design and/or coordination experience.
  • Experience in leading an engineering design team through all phases of project designs.
  • Familiarity with Baltimore area organizations such as MDPSC, MDE, and other regulatory agencies.
