Job Summary General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI), an affiliate of General Atomics, is a world leader in proven, reliable remotely piloted aircraft and tactical reconnaissance radars, as well as advanced high-resolution surveillance systems.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Staff Systems Engineer (Architecture, Modeling and Requirements) in our MQ-1C Engineering group at General Atomics - ASI.

Under general directions with limited review, this position is responsible for applying traditional and innovative systems engineering approaches to resolving unusual or complex engineering problems. Applies specialized knowledge, skills and experience to define, allocate, analyze, design, verify and validate systems, subsystems and their associated functional capabilities. Assignments are normally outlined in terms of overall objectives and reviewed periodically with stakeholders. Initiates the planning of engineering projects and develops innovative designs or modifications to meet project goals. Independently performs difficult/complex engineering work with instructions as to the general expected results. Documents findings, communicates results to engineering staff, makes technical presentations, and may represent the organization as the prime technical contact on small contracts or special feature/capability projects.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Formulate plans and oversee the development of new system capabilities/features from concept to fielding.
  • Conduct stakeholder requirements elicitation, analysis and definition.
  • Perform analysis of stakeholder requirements to decompose and allocate requirements to lower-levels of specification (system/segment/subsystem/component). Ensure bi-directional traceability between requirements at all levels of specification.
  • Apply Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) techniques to capture structural, behavioral, parametric and requirement aspects of the system.
  • Use SysML to express system requirements with use case diagram, activity diagrams, sequence diagrams, state diagrams, block definition diagrams and internal block diagrams and requirement diagrams.
  • Troubleshoot conflicting design/development requirements at all specification levels to ensure adequacy and satisfaction of requirements.
  • Maintain, manage and integrate requirements across various modeling tools and requirements management systems.
  • Collaborate with peers across various projects to promote knowledge sharing, model reuse and consistency in approach.
  • Provide technical coordination across engineering groups to facilitate the implementation, verification and validation of system requirements.
  • Prepare, review and present technical specifications.
  • Develop technical reports of findings and communicate results through technical presentations to engineering staff, management and customers.
  • Represent system engineering team at regular stakeholder meetings such as requirements change control boards, design reviews, and technical interchange meetings.
  • Participate in continual improvement of system engineering process. Define and maintain metrics to measure performance and predict future effort.
  • Develop rough order of magnitude or detailed estimates for new work based on historical data and past performance.
  • Provide support for proposals/white papers and customer interface.
  • May represent the Company as the prime technical contact to the customers and/or government regulatory agencies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications:
  • Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; nine or more years of experience with a bachelors degree, seven or more years of experience with a masters degree, or four or more years with a PhD.
  • Must have a thorough understanding of engineering concepts, principles, codes and theory; experience demonstrating a broad application of those concepts and expanding knowledge of principles, concepts, theory and practices in related technical specialties.
  • Must possess the ability to develop and communicate new concepts; apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment; organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases; and determine the appropriate approach at the task level or, with assistance, at the project level to provide solutions to a range of complex problems.
  • Proven experience with Model Based Systems Engineering using SysML and UML.
  • Experience in requirements elicitation, analysis and definition, as well as allocation, decomposition and bi-directional traceability.
  • Experience with requirements management tools such as IBM Rational DOORS and Integrity.
  • Experience with architectural modeling tools, such as IBM Rational Rhapsody, Magic Draw, Open MBEE, or Sparx Systems Enterprise Architect.
  • Able to work extended hours as required.
  • Ability to travel up to 25%.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD secret security clearance is required.
  • Experience in one of the following areas: aircraft engineering, systems engineering, software development and project management is desirable.
  • Familiarity with Government guidelines, regulations and certification for airworthiness, system/software safety, information assurance and cybersecurity is desirable.
  • Familiarity with various DOD and industry open standard initiatives IE: FACE, OMS, UCS, UCI, and STANAG is desirable.
