Job Title Network System Specialist
Job Description
The Network System Specialist will play an important role in supporting the efficient operation of our services, systems and network infrastructure.  This position will be tasked with broad range of responsibilities, including maintaining various aspects of our network, administering systems and providing technical support to faculty, staff and students.  This support includes, but is not limited to, Active Directory, server/system maintenance, storage, inventory, cybersecurity as well as virtualization environments for both client and server.  This position will be part of the IT Project Management team, completing assigned tasks and adhering to documented timeframes.

This position is a full-time Professional Services position (261-day contract).

Starting salary for the position is $45,000.00 annually.

Benefits include medical, dental & vision insurance, $50,000 life insurance, long-term disability, paid sick leave, paid discretionary leave, 15 days vacation per year, paid holiday and spring breaks and participation in IPERS or TIAA retirement plan.


The Network System Specialist will abide by the employment contract and relevant policies and guidelines of the Board of Trustees.
Essential Duties Summary
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • In collaboration with IT management, support Active Directory and Entra ID, including structure, use, groups/accounts, sync processes and settings, and cleanup work.
  •  Use PowerShell language to write and debug scripts to automate repetitive tasks and perform maintenance on various systems.
  • Work with modern versions of Microsoft Windows Professional, Windows server, Linux OS, and perform system patching as needed.
  •  Install, configure, and maintain servers, storage, and network devices.
  • Monitor server health and performance, proactively identifying and addressing any issues.
  • Work closely with third party vendors to implement, manage and maintain technical resources.
  •  Plan and execute regular server updates and patching to ensure system security and performance.
  •  Manage storage systems and allocate storage resources as needed.
  •  Complete assigned tasks with virtualization server and thin client environments as directed by Network Manager.
  • Collaborate with IT staff to complete projects and tasks for cloud infrastructures such as, Google, Microsoft Office 365, and Azure.
  • Responsible for collaborating with security team to complete preventative maintenance initiatives/services to reduce the risk of cybersecurity incidents.
  • Ensure data integrity, availability, and backup procedures are followed.
  • Assist in implementing and maintaining cybersecurity measures to protect the college’s network and data.
  • Collaborate with ITS Security Team, staff and department leaders to establish/enforce user access controls and database security.
  •  Ensure privacy and confidentiality of data and systems in compliance with regulations and institutional policies.
  • Abide by information security framework, policies and procedures.
  • Research, evaluate and communicates system upgrades, security trends, technology specifications and impact of technology conversions.
  • Be very organized and document requests, receive instructions and complete tasks in a timely manner.
  • Develop and maintain personal task lists to ensure that all project and day to day tasks are completed in an efficient manner. 
  •  Collaborate with ITS staff to plan, design and implement technology projects.  
  •  Participate in technology planning including the five-year network plan, information technology plan, security plan and disaster recovery plan.
  •  Document and communicate system processes, technical specifications, security information and other critical communication in a secured location.
  • Collaborate with ITS staff to ensure that help desk calls are regularly monitored and completes assigned troubleshooting tickets in an efficient manner.
  •  Documents hours in alignment with OEPI requirements and complete quarterly report.
  • Be able to relate and interact in an effective, positive manner with SCC students, employees, vendors, partners and the general public.

  • Research and stay current with emerging trends and technologies in IT.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Network Manager and Vice President of Technology Services.
  •  Adhere to college policies and regulations regarding data protection and privacy.
  • Provide consistent and efficient communication to supervisor on all relevant matters. 

  • Must be able to work on a basis of “available as work demands” in addition to a fixed schedule.
  • Provide on-call support as needed.

Required Qualifications
  • Associate’s Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field required (or equivalent work experience).
  •  Minimum of two years’ experience in network or computing environment preferred.
  • Experience in College IT work environment preferred.
  • Experience with server, storage, and network device management.
  • Strong knowledge of Windows and Linux operating systems.
  • Proficient in PowerShell scripting preferred.
  •  Experience with virtualization technologies (Examples:  Nutanix, VMware and Hyper-V)
  • Familiarity with networking concepts and protocols.
  • Knowledge of Cloud technologies and concepts.
  • Project Management experience preferred.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  •  Knowledge, awareness and commitment to cybersecurity and best practice.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to recent technologies and processes.
  • Honesty, integrity and ability to handle confidential matters with discretion required.
  •  Initiative, ability and motivation for continued self-improvement and to remain current in job assignments and technology.
  • Highly organized with independent critical thinking skills.
  • Understanding and commitment to the comprehensive community college philosophy.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.  
  • Strong human relations and interpersonal communication skills to interact positively with diverse personalities and populations.
  • Work with minimum supervision, to plan and complete tasks as needed.
  • Ability to bend and lift 40-50 pounds.
  • Must have valid driver’s license.

Physical Demands
The Network System Specialist must have the ability and mobility to service both campuses; ability to travel to other areas and throughout the college district as needed. Must be able to work on a basis of “available as work demands” in addition to a fixed schedule, which will include evenings and weekends. In addition, the individual in this position will actively promote a positive image for the college district.
