Under general direction, supervises, directs, and performs skilled mechanical work in the maintenance, modification, and repair of firefighting equipment; and performs related work as required.

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

Leads, plans, trains, reviews and performs the following: maintenance, repair, and overhaul of gasoline and diesel powered, heavy and light fire apparatus and equipment;  maintains, repairs and performs condition tests on such equipment as Fire Department cars, trucks and pumpers; re-assembles engines, tests, tunes, and adjusts fuel delivery systems, brakes, clutches, transmissions, and differentials; repairs and rebuilds front ends and brake systems; performs technical maintenance on specialized firefighting equipment; such as, fire pumps, portable generators, smoke ejectors, hydraulic systems, sirens, and beacon lights;  maintains records of equipment and materials used, and time spent on each piece of equipment, including data entry using modern office equipment; welds, fabricates, and modifies equipment; uses overhead crane and ground lifts to lift motors and heavy equipment; and responds to emergency scenes as requested to perform mechanical and other support work.

Participate in the selection of Fleet personnel. Evaluate and train assigned employees in their areas of work including proper mechanical maintenance and repair of work and safety methods, procedures and techniques.

Assign work and other duties to subordinates; coordinate resources and approve time off requests.

Verify the work of assigned employees for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques and compliance with applicable standards and specifications.  Work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline.

Assist in the budget development and administration; provide information and statistics in the forecast of funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies; and monitor expenditures.

Ensure an accurate inventory of parts for maintenance and emergency repairs; assist in the purchasing of equipment maintenance parts and materials; contact vendors and suppliers to obtain parts and materials as needed.

Operate the service counter in the absence of the service writer.

Work with multiple stakeholders to develop fire apparatus and motor vehicle specifications. Inspect apparatus under construction and new equipment.

Supervise acceptance and service tests of apparatus per current standards.

Purchase special equipment. Approve contract bids for specialized work.

Maintain equipment repair and related records. Prepare and maintain a variety of records, reports and correspondence in relation to assigned area of responsibility.

Analyze service records, work orders and related maintenance costs.

Develop a preventative maintenance schedule using electronic fleet management software. Ensure all maintenance is completed in compliance with current standards. Maintain and update records and prepare statistical maintenance reports.

Oversee maintenance and cleanliness of the shop and surrounding work area, disposal of waste oils and chemicals according to established safety procedures and guidelines.

Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures.

Estimate time, materials, and equipment required for jobs assigned.

Participate in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, and priorities for jobs assigned; identify opportunities for improving service delivery methods and procedures.  

Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Effectively perform mechanical and electrical trouble shooting work.


Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education and Training:
Completion of a high school diploma or equivalent and completion of two years of college or trade school supplemented by completion of apprenticeship in automotive and heavy truck mechanics.

Experience:
Seven years of increasingly responsible experience as a journeyman automotive and heavy truck mechanic, including four years of experience in the repair of heavy and lightduty fire apparatus and equipment.

License or Certificate:
Possession of a valid. Driver’s license at the time of appointment.  A non-commercial class B driver’s license with an F endorsement or equivalent must be obtained within two (2) years from appointment.

Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a mechanic shop environment; walk, stand, and sit for prolonged periods of time; frequently stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach, and twist; push, pull, lift, and/or carry moderate to heavy amounts of weights; operate assigned equipment and vehicles; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.
