We are looking for:
This co-op position includes responsibility for carrying out analyses on various samples for research and customer driven projects in both the Polymer Additives and Mining business lines. The position will focus on analytical techniques in Elemental analysis.
Elemental Analysis based analyses: The co-op will work with experienced elemental analyses group members utilizing both Inductively Coupled Plasma – Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) to support the business and research needs of both the polymer additive and mining research groups. This position requires the co-op to provide a high throughput of sample preparation and spectral measurements and analyses daily. While methods will be developed by a Senior Scientist, the position requires a basic understanding of ICP-OES and XRF in order to interpret results and suggest method improvements. The role also requires familiarity with all of the sample preparation methods including acid digestion for ICP and glass bead preparation for XRF. The co-op will write well-documented reports and communicate clearly with project teams and scientists. The role will require extensive interactions with research and development, process development, plants, technical services and other members of the analytical department.

  • Utilize ICP-OES and XRF for elemental analysis
  • Sample preparation methods: microwave acid digestion and glass bead fusion
  • Good knowledge of elemental analysis techniques: interpretation and improvements to existing methods.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills. Document work in electronic notebooks, reports and communicate with customers and colleagues.
  • Understand and follow key Syensqo safety policies and procedures for the site, including but not limited to the following:
  • Emergency Response / Evacuation Guidelines
  • Visitor Safety Policy
  • Housekeeping – 5S organization of laboratories
  • Demonstrate a commitment to safety
  • Attend monthly safety training
  • Know the location of first aid and emergency response equipment, chemicals, and chemical documentation.
  • Obtain equipment or process specific safety training as necessary according to the specific hazards

You will bring:

  • A current BS student in Analytical Chemistry or related discipline (Chemistry, Biology, Chemical Engineering or Forensic Science, etc).
  • Prior experience in analytical techniques is preferred: ICP, XRF.
  • The abilities to work well in technical workgroups, write well-documented reports, and communicate clearly are required.
  • We expect that the successful candidate will thrive in a dynamic team environment.
  • This position requires a high level of creativity, analytical skills, and independent work.
