It is the mission and responsibility of the Bureau of the State House to work with the Executive Office, the Massachusetts Legislature, state agencies and the Massachusetts Historical Commission in preserving, maintaining, and restoring the Massachusetts state capitol. We strive to efficiently provide a safe, accessible, clean, and secure seat of government, place of business, museum of art and history as well as a site for public congregation.
Position Summary
The Building Maintenance Supervisor II, under general supervision, oversees the maintenance and repair of the Massachusetts State House, the cleaning of building, interiors, and the upkeep of grounds; ensure that standards of security and cleanliness are maintained: and perform related work as required. The basic purpose of this work is to perform and oversee the general care, maintenance, repair, alteration and security of state buildings and appurtenances.
The incumbent of this position is responsible for effective implementation of building maintenance and repair activities. The employee is expected to keep abreast of new equipment, methods and procedures related to building maintenance, and to handle both routine and unusual problems related to building maintenance.
This is an Essential Emergency Personnel position expected to report to duty when the Governor states that only Essential Emergency Personnel are to report to their jobs during certain Governor-declared emergencies.
Duties and Responsibilities
Interior Responsibilities
- General building maintenance, including:
o Ceiling tile maintenance
o Respond to HVAC issues
o Utilize various pieces of large equipment & vertical lifts
o Carpet removal/installation
o Pest disposal
o Installation of window blinds
o Interior painting
o Wall/ceiling repair
o Window & curtain installation
o Sanding/staining of various woodworking projects
o Furniture maintenance including repairing, refurbishing, moving and disassembly prior to disposal
o Utilize various pieces of large equipment & vertical lifts to hang flags in the Great Hall and to install artwork at the direction of the State House curator
Cleaning Oversight
- Supervise cleaning of all event spaces, including ensuing adherence to all waste removal/recycling protocols following event
- Review cleaning issues with janitorial contract manager and cleaning staff
- Assisting with trash and recycling operations
- Collect & wrap electronics for recycling
- Clean dumpster alleyway
Exterior Responsibilities
- Perform Snow removal using motorized equipment and hand tools
- Complete landscaping duties, including planting flowers, mowing lawns, sweeping and trimming shrubs, etc.
- Display various flags on exterior flag poles
- General exterior building maintenance, including painting ironworks, washing windows
- Assist with installation/removal of holiday decorations
- Erect barriers and European fencing
- Security bollard maintenance
Assist with State House events
- Special Event setup for state functions
- Ensure the Great Hall kitchen is locked and clean after events
- Collaborate with event managers to make sure that all expectations are met
Other
- Work with various state agencies during emergency evacuations – Provide support and assistance to the guest of the State House, ensure the safe evacuation of both mobility challenged and low vision individuals. Work closely with DCR and Court Officers to assist those with disabilities to the freight elevator and out of the building safely.
- Work with SH security during emergency evacuations – Working Closely with DCR Rangers and MSP Troopers to ensure safe building evacuation during emergencies. Provide assistance and direction to Boston Fire Department when responding to emergencies at the MA State House.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of standard facility management practices.
- Experience utilizing computerized maintenance management systems.
- Knowledge of Massachusetts state agencies. Facilities maintenance and management structure and organization.
- Ability to present information both orally and in writing in a logical, concise, and comprehensive manner.
- Knowledge and skill in MS applications and current software programs.
