Summary

The Shop Manager is directly responsible for providing leadership to the maintenance shop.  They are responsible for the strategic planning, organizing, leading, and controlling of all onsite maintenance related functions.  The Shop Manager will supervise and coordinate the activities of the maintenance shop by guiding safety and environmental, quality, efficiency, and productivity improvement efforts. Additional responsibilities include facility and grounds oversight, recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and ensuring proper training of technicians.

 

Education and Experience

  1. Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university; or 5-7 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience in the industry.
  2. Firm understanding of the transportation industry with a strong working knowledge of diesel maintenance and repair principles.
  3. 3 or more years of supervisory experience required. 
  4. Strong employee performance management, training and coaching, recognition, and reward skills required.
  5. Thorough understanding of OSHA general shop safety / Haz-Mat regulations.
  6. Thorough understanding of planned and unplanned maintenance, repair, and body shop processes.
  7. Experience with the tools of the trade to maintain and service equipment such as diagnostic procedures, technical support, and reliability improvement.
  8. Working knowledge of capital management.
  9. Knowledge of how accounts receivables, accounts payable, and inventory affect the cycle as well as the techniques for improving working capital and the metrics that can be used to monitor performance.
  10. Ability to perform effectively under guidance/limited assistance from functional leadership.
  11. Strong interpersonal skills; able to establish trust and rapport with all levels of staff.  Able to relate effectively to diverse cultures.
  12. Outstanding coordination, facilitation, consultation, and conflict resolution skills.
  13. Able to foster a culture of transparency and a sense of purpose among the team and create clear accountabilities and metrics using positive and collaborative methods.
  14. Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage and prioritize workload in a fast-paced environment.
  15. Strong planning and problem-solving skills; able to identify and resolve problems promptly. 
  16. Able to gather and analyze information and develop alternative solutions.
  17. Excellent communication skills (written, listening, and verbal).
  18. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook) required.
  19. Willing and able to travel occasionally, including overnight travel.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Effectively lead daily shop operations for planned and unplanned maintenance, repairs, and body shop services on a vast variety of diesel tractors and trailers.
  2. Effectively manage equipment logistics including the use of materials, equipment, and employees ensuring safety, quality, and efficient operations.
  3. Directly and/or indirectly supervise Service Leaders and Technicians. Resolve most complex business problems for those on the team.
  4. Conduct regular shop safety inspections, correcting discovered deficiencies promptly.
  5. Partner with Human Resources in the recruiting, interviewing, selection, onboarding, and training of new employees.
  6. Provide effective employee performance management utilizing SMART goals, timely and constructive feedback, coaching for improvement, and progressive discipline.
  7. Ensure continued focus on the expansion and development of a cohesive shop service customer support team/department.
  8. Effective management of department annual operating budget cost center, AP, and AR.
  9. Accountable for shop productivity and repair quality, partnering with Service Leaders.
  10. Monitor the status of open Work Orders to ensure timely processing and posting. Address issues that impact the completion of the repair plan in the estimated time quoted.
  11. Monitor equipment out of service and escalate for resolution when needed.
  12. Participate in continuous improvement activities by reviewing, changing, and improving processes in line with changing customer expectations/organizational goals.
  13. Resolve customer concerns related to maintenance; develop strong relationships with key stakeholders through frequent and professional communication.
  14. Ensure the volume of work produced meets company standards and ensures customer satisfaction.
  15. Identify trends and initiate changes/improvements necessary to achieve goals and objectives while ensuring customer needs are met without interruption to service levels.
  16. Collaborate with the diesel tech trainer to design and implement ongoing training for new and current employees; recommend development plan priorities and provide opportunities that enhance employee career growth.

  20. Complete work responsibilities outside of normal business hours as needed and infrequent travel may be required. 
  21. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

This position performs work primarily in an office setting.

  1. Constantly in a stationary position and occasionally will move around.
  2. Constantly operates a keyboard and mouse and constantly utilizes a computer monitor(s).
  3. Constantly conversing with internal and external customers in person or via the phone system.
  4. Exposure to the following due to walking on the shop floor:
  1. Loud noises intermittently require hearing protection.
  2. Temperature extremes intermittently due to outside weather conditions.
  3. Dirt, dust, grease, chemicals, and odors intermittently.
