Supervisor Sterile Processing @ Swedish Edmonds
Full Time (40 Hour Week)
Day Shift
8 Hour Shifts
Responsible for the efficient and safe operation of the Sterile Processing Department and High Level Disinfection (HLD) program for all departments in the hospital.
Scope includes surgical services, labor and delivery, endoscopy, hospital clinics and departments utilizing HLD and community agencies. Ensures that all aspects of sterilization including decontamination, processing, HLD of equipment as appropriate and sterilization of instrumentation. In addition accountable for staffing, training, employee review and discipline, cost containment and compliance with all regulatory standards. Has direct supervisory responsibility for endoscopy technicians as well as sterile processing technicians; responsible for development of apprenticeship program. Responsible for staffing assignments, training, employee evaluations, disciplinary action, cost containment, quality monitoring and control. Departments served include surgical services, labor and delivery, endoscopy, clinics, imaging, and outside vendors.

Staff scheduling and department coverage: Department is staffed to manage workload. Collaborates effectively with staff to assure the provision of services. Identifies and addresses clinical and operational issues that impact the provision of services. Assures appropriate staffing levels and consistency of patient care by the assignment of resources appropriately. Identifies clinical and operational issues and addresses them in a timely and appropriate manner. Informed regarding unit specific quality activities and data.
Staff time and hours: Comply with time and pay practices, to ensure staff paid correctly.
Monitoring and changing Policies and Procedures: Policy and Procedures are up to date and evidenced based on science and follow the AORN and AMII Standards.
Employee performance: Employee evaluations completed in timely manner. Collaborates with the manager/director in employee performance evaluation. Oversees orientation of new staff, documents competency upon completion of orientation and maintains documentation of competencies, orientation etc. Oversees staff scheduling process. Adheres to all labor contracts and HR policies and procedures. Ensures Value-Based Standards and Behaviors are modeled and demonstrated by all staff.
Maintains Professional growth and development: Staff oriented, competent and trained to do job assigned. Maintains a strong clinical knowledge base by attending seminars and educational offerings, reading journals, and networking with peers. Develops leadership and management skills in a planned approach.
Oversight of sterilization process: Biological processes performed per policy with documentation current and present at all times. Monitors and maintains standard of practice for decontamination and sterilization.
Hiring and disciplinary: Manages in a timely manner. Assists manager with hiring and personnel functions and policy application. Consistently applies the Human Resources policy and procedures.
Leadership: Participates in unit and departmental committees and meetings. Participates in process improvement activities. Role models expected behavior for staff. Provides positive leadership for the unit changes.
Communication: Maintains effective working relationship and communication with physicians, managers, directors, and other department personnel. Communicates with staff regularly about unit and hospital issues.
Required Qualifications:
Certified Registered Central Service Technician - Healthcare Sterile Processing Association upon hire.
National Certified Healthcare Leader - Healthcare Sterile Processing Association upon hire. Or
National Certified Instrument Specialist - Healthcare Sterile Processing Association upon hire.
2 years progressive work-related experience in sterile processing, surgical services, and/ or supply chain materials management.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree - Focus in healthcare or business or equivalent educ/experience
Equivalent education/experience (1:1) will substitute for each year of college not completed.
Coursework/Training: Successful completion of (or current enrollment in) a Central Services technician course.
Experience in a leadership role either as a lead or supervisor.
Working with instrument tracking systems and materials ordering systems.
