Description

Under the immediate or general supervision of the Public Works Superintendent, the
Maintenance Lead Supervisor or a Maintenance Lead Worker, assists with the
maintenance of City facilities and performs assigned tasks to assist public works crews.

The position consists of temporary shift work between April and September. Start and
end dates vary. Shifts start as early as 6:00AM and end as late as 11:00 PM, including
weekends and holidays.

Essential Duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Under direct supervision, performs assigned tasks in order to maintain the City's park
system, surface water system and other City facilities, including but not limited to: lawn
mowing, tree trimming, weeding of flower beds and vegetation management in and
around surface water detention ponds.
Uses a variety of hand and power operated tools and equipment such as shovels, picks,
blowers, hand compactors, pumps, drills, brooms, weed eaters, lawn mowers and other
gas powered and electric hand tools to complete assigned tasks.
Operates machinery and equipment such as a pickup truck or other light duty
vehicles to complete assigned maintenance tasks.
Performs routine daily maintenance of equipment including fueling, greasing,
and checking fluid levels as needed.
Performs work in compliance with federal and state laws, OSHA, WISHA and
Department Policies and Procedures.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:
Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner, provides response within
scope of knowledge or refers the matter to employees of higher classification.
Keeps records of daily tasks and incidents.
Waters flower baskets, detention ponds maintenance, assists in asphalt patching
and signage.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Skills and Abilities Required:
Working knowledge of maintenance equipment and procedures.
Working knowledge of safety standards and precautions related to maintenance.
Ability to use the mechanical tools of the trade.
Ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend the English language.
Ability to understand and follow written and oral directions.
Ability to work cooperatively in a work crew .
Ability to performs manual labor in all weather conditions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees
and the public.
Skilled in using hand tools and equipment of the laboring trade.
Ability to work independently
Operate pickup trucks and other light duty vehicles skillfully and safely.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and use
hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee frequently is
required to talk or hear. The employee is required to stand, walk, reach with hands and
arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

Depending upon the facility, the work is performed indoors or outdoors in all types of
weather. The employee is exposed to a variety of potential hazards associated with
working near or in traffic, park activities and maintenance equipment. Employees will
be required to routinely work any time between the hours of 6:30 a.m. and 11:00 p.m.,
in the evenings, on weekends, or holidays and work odd shift hours or other hours as
assigned.

Duties require strenuous physical activity such as lifting and carrying heavy objects up
to 50 lbs. routinely, shoveling, and other manual labor.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Possess a valid Washington State Driver's License
  • A driving record abstract from the Washington State Department of Licensing
  • must be provided to the city prior to the date of hire.
  • First Aid Certification and CPR (preferred)
  • Flagger's Card (preferred but not required)
  • Possess education and experience that provides the applicant with the necessary knowledge, skills, and ability required to perform the essential duties of the job.

Employees receive one hour of sick leave for every 40 hours worked.
