At the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Ecological and Water Resources Division (EWR), we work to protect and manage our state's natural heritage. This position provides statewide leadership for management and research on Scientific and Natural Areas (SNAs). This position also manages the Natural Area Registry (NAR), and provides management policy guidance on SNA, NAR, and Native Prairie Bank (NPB) easement lands for the purposes of conserving rare species and the state’s natural diversity. This work requires collaboration and coordination with a diverse array of partners to protect and perpetuate the ecological health, biological diversity, and rare resources for which these sites were established. Job responsibilities include:

  • State Resource Management: Provide state-level leadership related to land management, ecological monitoring and restoration and ensure consistency in the application of statewide policies and procedures. Increase effective collaborations and ensure safe operations while supporting region-based staff in creative problem-solving and decision-making.

  • Adaptive Management Planning. Guide and facilitate the preparation and review of resource inventories and plans and ecological monitoring activities to ensure appropriate public use and the perpetuation of ecological diversity and rare resource protection.

  • Resource Management Oversight and Support. Provide state-level oversight and support of adaptive management and ecological monitoring to meet program requirements and ensure safe operations.

  • SNA Permits & Research. Coordinate the review and issuance of required permits and coordinate an overall research agenda to enhance awareness of rare resources and the factors impacting them.

  • Natural Area Registry. Oversee the Natural Area Registry (NAR) to support cooperative public land management and perpetuate ecological diversity and rare resource conservation.

Primary work location is negotiable based on business need and space availability but will be determined at the time of hire. Work location must be within the state (Northwest, Northeast, Southwest, Southeast or Central regions). This position has a flexible work arrangement and may be eligible to telework on a part-time basis subject to change. If approved, the employee would be required to complete a telework agreement.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in ecology, botany, conservation biology, or closely related field.

  • Three (3) years professional experience in natural area management and restoration programs at a regional or statewide level.

  • Three (3) years of experience on prescribed fire with a wildland fire certification of MN Fire Fighter 2 (FFT2) or National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) FFT2.

  • Scientific and technical knowledge in the ecology, management, ecological monitoring, and restoration of native plant communities found in Minnesota.

  • Experience developing site habitat management plans, site development plans and ecological monitoring activities.

  • Experience implementing land management techniques for complex resource management issues, including the use of prescribed fire, grazing, haying, woody control, invasive treatment as ecosystem management tools.

  • Knowledge of ecosystem assessment and management, environmental sampling and analysis, and the ability to use geographic information systems (GIS).

  • Advanced human relations skills to work collaboratively with others across all levels of an organization and across public and private sector partnerships with diverse communities.

  • Experience leading teams without direct supervision.

  • Ability to manage and track the outcomes of multiple simultaneous projects within legal and procedural constraints.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Intermediate or advanced Minnesota prescribed fire qualifications, such as MN Prescribed Fire Burn Boss Type 2 (RxB2) certification.

  • Knowledge of fiscal matters at the scale of a large agency, particularly contracting, grant management, purchasing and vendor requirements.

  • Knowledge of ecosystem ecology, natural history, plant and animal taxonomy, forestry, soil science, geology, watershed approaches, and status and trends as related to the terrestrial ecosystems and invasive species of the Midwest.

Additional Requirements

This position requires an unrestricted Class D Driver’s License with a clear driving record
