About the Job
Northrop seeks a visionary and creative organist to serve in a part time Northrop Organist position which will serve as curator for Northrop's extraordinary Aeolian-Skinner organ Op. 892. Northrop and the UMN School of Music believe the instrument can be the foundation of a thriving organ program and a vibrant studio, within the rich organ community present in the Twin Cities. This position provides assistance to the various users (especially new users) of the organ from the UMN campus community as well as our Twin Cities organ and music community and guest artists. The Northrop Organist will have the option to give one performance during each academic year as part of Northrop's Music Series and will provide consultation about other performances as part of the position's service to the Northrop Organ Advisory Board. The position provides leadership and advice on maintenance to ensure the preservation and optimal use of the instrument(s). The Northrop Organist will be an important liaison between Northrop and the School of Music, and will build bridges between Northrop, students, faculty, guest artists, and community. The position is well suited to pair with a teaching role, a performing career, and/or a church position.
This is a 40% time, temporary Civil Service position for a term of 2 years (classification 8412CU, Museum Pro 2-Curation). The expected start for this position is Summer 2024.
JOB DUTIES:
Performance and Engagement (40%):
Facilitate School of Music student and ensemble recital and concerts at Northrop
Connect Northrop guest artists with School of Music faculty and students to enhance curricular offerings
Encourage use of the Northrop Organ for major university and community celebrations
Facilitate co-presentations with regional arts organizations and strengthen ties to the School of Music, Minnesota Orchestra, and other essential partners
Attend organ performances and special events and invite personal and professional networks to attend
Optionally, perform once each season as part of Northrop's Music Series
Northrop Organ Advisory Board (20%)
Participate in regular meetings (approx. 4 per year) and at least one board subcommittee
Provide feedback about potential organ programs
Collaborate with Development staff to generate resources for Northrop's funding priorities related to the organ
Curation & Maintenance (20%):
Consult with organ tuners/technicians (currently Draeger Co.), Foley-Baker Inc. (the organ restorers), and Classic Organworks (maker of the electronic systems in the organ) regarding the ongoing care and maintenance of the instrument, acting as primary Northrop liaison with these contractors
Troubleshoot tuning and repair issues on behalf of all users of the organ, and act as "first responder" when problems arise with the organ
Consult with School of Music about maintenance of the organs in Ferguson Hall
Organ Use & Scheduling (20%):
Advise guest artists and new users on how to use the organ console
Advise concerning "best practices" regarding the care and cleanliness of the console
Maintain a log of organ users, combination memory assignments, repair notes
Manage Northrop Organ calendar regarding availability for rehearsals and performances as well as tuning and maintenance
WORK HOURS: 18 hours/week, arranged
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
BA/BS in related field plus at least two years of related experience OR a combination of education and experience to equal six years to include at least 2 years' education or experience in pipe organ performance, design, and/or care and maintenance.
Must be flexible with the ability to work days, evenings, and weekends as needed.
Excellent interpersonal skills to communicate with donors, artists, audiences and community youth.
The successful candidate for this position will be a musician of unquestioned skill and educational training who possesses significant experience with solo and ensemble/orchestral
performances. An artist who:
REINVENTS the old-fashioned, sacred music image of the pipe organ to a relevant, contemporary musical resource for presenting traditional, contemporary and orchestral
arrangement repertoire.
EXHIBITS imagination, innovation and open-mindedness on how to use the pipe organ in the widest possible range of musical and artistic performances.
ACTS as an ambassador for the organ in general, the Northrop organ in particular and the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities.
UTILIZES multiple forms of technology to spread the inspiration being created by the Northrop organ.
ADVOCATES for music education and participation for Twin Cities children of all ages, ethnicities and backgrounds.
POSSESSES an understanding and appreciation for the early 20th century technologies of our instrument, as well as familiarity with the 21st century technologies with which the Northrop organ is now equipped.
