About the Job



Major job functions for this position include the following.

1) Service Manager - 60%
- Consult on existing services and experimental design.
- Project manage multiple (25+) concurrent operational projects effectively and ensure on-time completion.
- Consult with investigators to help interpret the results and discuss additional analyses that might be needed.
- Monitor technological developments and suggest alternative methods and protocols for operations.
- Develop new methods and protocols or modify existing protocols.
- Perform multiple complex scientific procedures effectively, efficiently and independently.
- Operate all specialized instrumentation and technologies to meet project specifications on time.
- Help Operations Managers establish and monitor process control system (QA/QC) for workflows.
- Independently troubleshoot experiments, processes, and instruments.
- Work collaboratively with other staff and researchers including standard operations.

2) Write manuscripts for publications and present research (15%)
- Write manuscripts and/or scientific protocols for publications and/or grants.
- Present research results through seminars, publications and conference abstracts.

3) Collaborative Work and Project Management - 15%
- Collaborate with staff as well as internal and external clients
- Create and track projects using the UMGC's Laboratory-information Management System.
- Keep detailed records of experiments.
- Coordinate experiments with other staff members.
- Conduct regular meetings with supervisor to discuss the progress of projects.
- Communicate with clients and collaborators regarding project planning, status, and results.

4) Supervise and Mentor - 10%
- Supervise and mentor, as needed, undergraduate, graduate students, junior scientists and postdocs working on related research projects.

Generally work days: Monday-Friday, 8:00AM-4:30PM with some evening and or weekend hours. Duties/ Responsibility percentages will vary according to what is needed at the Core Facility. Profile Two - Regularly Remote Time spent working remotely is consistently less than 50% time. Dedicated work space to be provided.

Must be able to lift 25 pounds.

Qualifications



Required (Minimum) Qualifications: Position requires an advanced degree with 4 or more years of research training, or BA/BS with 6 years experience. Major in science with focus in biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, cancer biology, or related science field. At least one year of research training in related field including single-cell research. Experience in a laboratory environment with a background in genomic research and/or high-throughput methodologies. Demonstrated experience in research and/or project management as well as data analysis. Ability to follow oral directions and written protocols precisely, independently motivated, able to manage time and meet deadlines, strong communication skills, meticulous organizational skills, reliability and accountability of work. Expertise in cellular and molecular biology techniques. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with others. Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications: (Selection Criteria) Extensive molecular biology laboratory experience including working under BSL2 plus conditions and in clinical setting. Experience working in NGS std and custom Library prep and workflows as well as extractions and quality control. Experience with writing manuscripts and/or grants. Record of presenting research results through publications and conference abstracts. Deep and broad experience with and knowledge of single-cell and next-generation sequencing technologies. Rigorous and scrupulous attention to experimental detail. Ability to think creatively about scientific problems. Experience in bio-informatic analysis and statistical analysis of experimental data.

About the Department



We seek a Laboratory Scientist to join the University of Minnesota Genomics Center (UMGC). The UMGC provides a wide range of genomic services to UMN and external researchers, with a particular focus on Single cell, Spatial and NGS tools. This position will include a major role in our Operations Group, and a smaller role in Co-Lab efforts. Operationally, the successful candidate will manage and process Single Cell service projects and Spatial Projects at the UMGC for internal and external researchers. This will involve consulting with clients on experimental design, and providing deep expertise on genomic technologies, managing projects as they are executed, and generating and delivering results, including consulting with clients after data delivery on interpretation of their results. The position will require the running, maintaining, and troubleshooting of specialized scientific instrumentation and wet lab workflows necessary to accomplishing these projects, and managing and training employees who will also be working on these projects. In addition to these operational roles, there may also be work in our R&D group, developing, optimizing, and troubleshooting new and emerging technologies.
