Transportation & Community Planner

Salary Range: $61,131 to $78,956
Hiring Range: $61,131 to $69,474

Full Time: Work Hours Are Flexible and Some Remote Work Supported (Hybrid Model)

Mid-Minnesota Development Commission (MMDC) is seeking a full-time Transportation & Community Planner. This professional will assist local stakeholders to improve communities, with particular attention given to transportation and related projects.
Work will include grant application and other technical assistance for a variety of local projects (e.g., trail projects, carbon-reducing projects, etc.), as well as active transportation and Safe Routes to Schools planning, work related to the improvement of our region’s vehicle, rail, and airport infrastructure, and more.

Significant time will be dedicated to a long-standing service agreement with the Minnesota Department of Transportation. However, our new planning professional will also have the opportunity to pursue other planning projects that complement their strengths and interests.

The right applicant will have a solid understanding of community planning and good familiarity with transportation principles. They will be a customer focused team player, able to work with a wide variety of local personalities and comfortable in a public environment (giving presentations, facilitating group meetings, etc.).
Technical planning OR related experience, including experience with transportation or other community planning projects (e.g., parks planning, comprehensive planning, strategic organizational planning), or a related degree is needed. A good understanding of Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping is also desired.

MMDC is headquartered in the heart of the Willmar Lakes Area, on the beautiful and historic MinnWest Technology Campus, less than two hours west of Downtown Minneapolis. We are a small, public, regional development organization, serving communities, residents, and organizations throughout our four-county area (Minnesota Counties of Kandiyohi, McLeod, Meeker, and Renville).

MMDC offers competitive pay and benefits, as well as a professional but “family-first” environment. We are a friendly, relatively casual workplace (e.g., dress as appropriate for your workday). Productivity is rewarded with flexibility. Significant remote work is permitted, contingent upon output, and MMDC employees have ample opportunity to pursue areas of interest within the scope of their work. We like to hire good, motivated people who strive to be useful and want to do good things for our region’s residents. When this works out, we find that micromanagement isn’t necessary.
