Fairview Health Services Anatomic Pathology Technician in Minneapolis, Minnesota

Overview

M Health Fairview is looking for an Anatomic Pathology Technician for the Acute Care Laboratory at M Health Fairview, University of Minnesota Medical Center - West Bank (https://www.mhealthfairview.org/locations/M-Health-Fairview-University-of-Minnesota-Medical-Center---West-Bank-east) .  This is a full-time, evening shift position, 2:45 pm – 11:15 pm, with 3 out of 6 weekends. The Acute Care Laboratory is an engaging work environment focused on patient safety and experience. The patient population is diverse and includes pediatric specialties (both inpatient and outpatient), behavioral health, rehab, and medical-surgical patients. The duties include specimen procurement and handling, receiving, processing (centrifugation and aliquoting of patient samples), managing sample accountability, answering nursing and provider questions, coordinating specimen drops and patient collections, etc.

This position is eligible for a retention bonus of up to $1,000, paid out every 6 months . The retention bonus is pro-rated based on FTE.

The University of Minnesota Medical Center Acute Laboratories performs clinical hematology, chemistry, blood gas, coagulation, urinalysis, transfusion medicine, and blood collection and processing. The West Bank Acute Care Laboratory serves a variety of pediatric and adult patients.  The Acute Care team consists of 100 employees, and the laboratory is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Responsibilities Job Description

The APT performs all work processes necessary for the preparation or procurement of specimens used for high complexity testing as defined by CLIA'88. The APT possesses knowledge of the pathology/clinical laboratories, performs routine and specialty processes, recognizes problems, identifies basic causes, and makes corrections using established protocols. The APT analyzes data based on knowledge of technical and instrumental conditions affecting diagnostic test results and performs procedures within established parameters. The APT collaborates with the customers of the laboratory to assure an exceptional customer experience. The APT works independently under general supervision.

Job expectations include: following established guidelines to obtain specimens and prioritize work, accession/order enter specimens/tests into the computer system, evaluating diagnostic preparations for quality and initiates interventions as needed, following Laboratory Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement, and Laboratory Compliance Programs, performing other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • 24 credits college coursework with at least 12 credits in chemistry or biological sciences, or

  • 24 credits college coursework + 2 years of medical laboratory experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • BS degree

  • 1-2 years of experience in a clinical laboratory or anatomic diagnostic laboratory

  • Demonstrates the ability to work under stress in a variety of situations. Ability to exercise independent judgment. Demonstrate manual dexterity. Basic computer and keyboarding skills.
