Memory Keepers-Medical Discovery Team (MK-MDT), UMN Medical School, Duluth Campus has the mission of promoting health equity across all rural and Indigenous populations across the state. The MK-MDT is focused on the health of older adults and specifically, on issues associated with dementia. We use strength-based community-based approaches to research in a team science environment. The MK-MDT works collaboratively with Faculty Investigators from the Department of Family Medicine and Biobehavioral Health, UMN Twin Cities, and academic and community research partners throughout the Great Lakes Region, Canada, Alaska, and internationally. Reporting to the Executive Director, The Communications Specialist will temporarily fill in for our Communications Manager while she is on leave. He/She will be responsible for over-seeing and ensuring rigor in the MK-MDT communications strategy and for promoting our work within the university and to the public by creating digital media content using research findings to assist the university and public understand the relevance and application of MK-MDT research perspectives, projects, and findings. This includes communication via websites, phone, and in-person; blogs; podcasts; newsletters; print and social media.

Key responsibilities include:
* Provide communications expertise to our established communications portfolio.
* Publish newsletters that include faculty, research staff, affiliates, and community member highlights.
* Provide editorial direction for our website and social channels.
* Support onsite and off-site events, ensuring that our public facing storytelling efforts are integrated and aligned.
* Analyze insights, trends, market research and marketing best practices to build successful strategies.
* Communicate and market academic articles and manuscripts.
* Partner with graphic designers, digital and website strategists, writers, and other internal and external stakeholders as needed and ensure any work is reflective of and in line with University of Minnesota brand standards.
* Monitor and manage social media, maintain and update website, manage newsfeeds and social media/Twitter feeds.
* Ensure quality control for all external communications.
* Support the development of MK-MDT outreach initiatives as appropriate.
* Seek ways to respectfully integrate Indigenous knowledge, ways of knowing, stories, and lived experience, within and alongside communications tools such as infographics and other data visualization materials.

Qualifications



All required qualifications must be shown on application materials
* Required qualifications:
* BA/BS degree in communications, journalism, marketing, art or related field plus 6 years of professional experience
* Strong written and oral communications skills
* Ability to effectively communicate to diverse academic and community audiences
* Experience with social media, website maintenance and graphic design
* Ability to travel, occasionally overnight, within Minnesota

* Preferred qualifications:
* MA, MSc or other graduate degree in communications, Health Science, Public Health, or Social Sciences (Experienced candidates with a Bachelor's degree will be considered).
* Understanding or interest in issues of Health Equity and the health of older adults
* Knowledge of history, geography and politics of Minnesota rural and Indigenous communities.
