About the Job

The Office of the President invites nominations and applications for the position of Director of the University Senate Office and University Awards and Honors. The Director is a University System position and reports to the Chief of Staff, Office of the President, and manages a team of professionals that support and enhance the University's long history of, and strong commitment to, shared governance among its faculty, staff and students.

University Senate governance at the University of Minnesota is steeped in rich tradition. The umbrella body, the University Senate, was established in 1912 and consisted only of faculty members at that time. The University Senate is comprised of four senates: the Faculty Senate, the Student Senate, the P&A Senate, and the Civil Service Senate. Much of the work of the senates is conducted through committees. Each senate has an executive, or consultative, committee. Under the five consultative committees, there are 23 standing committees and 14 standing subcommittees. Most committees consist of faculty, student, civil service, P&A, and, where appropriate, retirees, alumni, and ex officio members.
The Director is responsible for the effective oversight, direction and performance of the University Senate Office, which supports the work of more than 1,000 faculty, staff and students participating in University Senate governance across the University system. The Director develops and implements the department's initiatives and priorities, supervises the Senate Office staff, and manages the budget for all governance and University Honors and Awards.

Major Responsibilities
Ensure that the work of the University Senate and its standing committees and subcommittees, student, P&A, and civil service senates are effectively carried out.
Lead and oversee a team of professionals in the delivery of services in the Senate Office. Create a positive and inclusive work environment for the staff. Champion and promote employee engagement and professional development for each team member, supporting staff to use their full range of talents and abilities. Hire and retain a high quality, diverse staff.
Advise senate governance leaders and University senior leadership on governance issues as appropriate.
Develop and implement annual committee chair and new senator orientation and support effective faculty governance leadership transitions.
Serve as administrative staff to the Faculty/Senate Committees, including liaising between the committees, the Senate Office, and other central and collegiate administrative offices, developing agendas in consultation with chairs, drafting correspondence, minutes, and reports, and conducting research and collecting data as needed.
As director of University Awards and Honors, oversee the Regents Professorship, President's Award for Outstanding Service, Outstanding Achievement Awards, Award of Distinction, Alumni Service Award, honorary degrees and honorific namings, including providing guidance to senior leaders, collegiate deans, faculty, and others as needed.
Direct the work of the All-University Honors Committee, which involves close collaboration with the Office of the Board of Regents, the Office of the President, and the University Senate Office as the committee fulfills its responsibility to solicit, review and recommend nominations for all-University honors.
Advocate for the value of shared governance and present to campus groups and national conferences regarding the role of governance, processes, and policies.
Build and foster relationships with other university departments. Serve as spokesperson for the department.
Assume other duties as assigned.
Appointment: This position reports directly to the Chief of Staff, Office of the President. The job classification is Administrative Manager 3. Salary range is $100,000-130,000. This position is a hybrid position with a mix of in-office and remote work.
