Job Description:
"The Head of State Government Affairs (SGA) will be responsible for overseeing the State Government Affairs of Ameriprise Financial. In this role, you will lead the company's state legislative efforts on all issues affecting a large-scale, diversified financial services company with operations across the country, including managing the company's risk from state legislation and regulation. This includes monitoring, evaluating and advocating on state policy initiatives, and state legislation and regulation affecting the company's operations. This role will also serve as a liaison with local government in cities where the company has significant operations. Additionally, this person will represent the company at industry trade associations and support senior executive engagement with industry groups. This individual will have strong skills in analyzing, understanding, and translating complex legislative, regulatory and policy issues to advise on pending legislation, regulations, changes in key government policy and other government affairs matters pertinent to SGA, and will fully appreciate the relationship between enterprise needs and state legislative and regulatory activity.Key ResponsibilitiesIdentify and analyze legislation and regulations that affect the company's business operations and long-term strategy. Maintain and build and leverage relationships with relevant officials and policymakers. Manage relationships with outside counsel and represent the Company in trade and civic associations. Develop and implement advocacy strategies with state and local officials to further enterprise goals and objectives.Responsible for monitoring and communicating policy developments; including the preparation of policy and political updates and background material to internal stakeholders. This includes providing thought leadership to business partners on public policy issues and issues impacting their products and services.Develop and execute advocacy strategy to advance the company's interests. The ideal candidate is well versed in relevant rules governing business and lobbying activities. With strong verbal and written communication skills, they have demonstrated leadership capabilities and excel in relationship management. Their proven track record in advocacy, coupled with a strategic thinking mindset, allows them to develop and execute effective plans. Political acumen and awareness enable them to navigate politically sensitive situations. Thought leadership, adaptability, ethical conduct, research, and problem-solving skills are critical to be successful in this role. Required Qualifications:Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience; Juris Doctorate preferred.7-10 years of experience in Government Relations. This includes knowledge of state government structures, legislative processes, and regulatory frameworks.Exposure to relevant financial services and tax laws and policy environment a plus. This includes the ability to analyze and understand complex policy issues and assess their impact on the firm.Demonstrated collaboration skills to work effectively with internal colleagues, industry associations and external stakeholders.Advanced critical analysis skills; strong leadership skills for prioritizing tasks and driving results.Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively convey the firm's positions and engage with government officials and shareholders.Strong relationship management skills including a proven track record of building and maintaining relationships with key government officials, legislators, and other stakeholders.Proven track record of advocacy skills with the ability to advocate for a firm's interests persuasively, influencing policy decisions and outcomes.Strategic thinking mindset with the capacity to develop and execute strategic plans aligning government affairs initiatives with the firm's overall objectives.Political Acumen including awareness of political dynamics, potential issues, and the ability to navigate politically sensitive situations.Proven adaptability skills given the evolving nature of government affairs, adaptability to changing political landscapes and regulatory environments.Strong ethical conduct including high ethical standards and understanding of compliance requirements in lobbying and government relations.Demonstrated track record in problem solving and issue management.
