Definition

Under general supervision, is responsible for organizing and instructing aquatics programs at one or more recreational facilities; performs related duties as required.

Examples of Work

(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)

  • Instructs or coaches program participants of all ages in the fundamentals, rules, and techniques of aquatics recreational or fitness activities; considers and adjusts instruction to accommodate the wellness and skill level of participants
  • Develops lesson plans for aquatics lessons, camps, or classes that may include swim stroke instruction, swim meet preparation, or wellness programs
  • Communicates with participants regarding progress including updates for parents or guardians; responds to public inquiries regarding aquatics programs;
  • Supports participant goals with regard to attaining skill levels in swimming, diving, or drowning prevention;
  • Assesses program participants for swimming skill levels, approves advancement of participant skill levels, as appropriate
  • Submits swim meet entries and provides on deck coaching for aquatics events
  • Sets up and tears down needed equipment for program such as for swim meets or wellness classes
  • Requisitions supplies, equipment, and material needs for aquatics instructing and support tool;
  • Monitors use of pool and other aquatics areas to practice safety first mentality; assists with maintenance of pools and equipment
  • Plans, organizes, and promotes classes, clinics, and swim meets
  • Supervises program participants and takes necessary steps to insure that they adhere to standards of good conduct.

Minimum Qualifications

Three (3) months of experience coaching, lifeguarding, or providing aquatics instruction.

Possession of a valid nationally recognized aquatics instructing or aquatics coaching certification such as, American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor, American Red Cross Basic Swim Instructor, American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor Certificate, U.S. Masters Swim (USMS) Coaches Certification, Aquatic Exercise Association (AEA) Fitness Professional Certification, American Swim Coaches Association (ASCA) Certification, U.S.A. Swimming or Diving Coaches Certification, NFHS National Coaching Credentials with sport-specific coursework in swimming or diving.

By completion of the probationary period, must possess a valid American Red Cross Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification and American Red Cross 

Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Certification, OR possess a valid American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certificate which includes Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid Basics.
