Copeland Metallurgical Engineer in Sidney, Ohio

The Corporate Materials Engineering department located in Sidney, Ohio is the central resource supporting Copeland's varied and global business units. It is comprised of metallurgy, chemistry, and polymer engineering functions. We are seeking an individual to support the Metallurgical Engineering laboratory. For this challenging position, it is required that the candidate has a good balance of project management and technical skill sets. This fully staffed laboratory has state-of-the-art analysis and testing equipment. Two other international Copeland Materials Engineering laboratories have dotted-line reporting to the Sidney, Ohio laboratory.

As a Metallurgical Engineer YOU WILL:

  • Perform testing, conduct analysis and prepare report in an accurate and timely manner to support and drive a variety of metallurgy related activity and initiatives (failure analysis, product qualification, product development, evaluation of corrosion resistance, welding & brazing qualification, tribology testing) requiring specialized skills and broad R&D and/or manufacturing experience

  • Support internal customers on the Fit-for-service evaluation, supplier selection, specification review, manufacturing process and product quality improvement, recommending countermeasures to an issue, and improvement opportunity

  • Model the right behavior in terms of initiative, compliance, safety, moral character and work ethic to build teamwork and mutual respect amongst employees

  • Work within a cross-functional team of internal and external customers

Required Education, Experience & Skills:

  • Bachelors degree in Metallurgical or Materials Engineering

  • Technical report writing and presentation to large internal and/or external audience

  • Experience in at least two of the following concentration disciplines:

  • Manufacturing : Casting, rolling, Heat treatment/annealing and coating of metal (cast iron, steel, aluminum) processes, properties defects

  • Metallurgical Analysis: Metallurgical failure analysis, tribology, corrosion of steel, aluminum, copper and electronic; process-microstructure- property relationship,

  • Materials Joining and NDT : Metal joining technologies (Welding of steel, brazing), Non-destructive Testing

  • Legal authorization to work in the United States - Sponsorship will not be provided for this role.

Preferred Education, Experience & Skills:

  • Masters degree

  • 5+ years of experience in manufacturing or R&D technical role

  • Previous HVAC&R (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration) experience

  • Modeling methodologies relating to materials engineering

  • Hand on experience: sample cutting, mounting and polishing tools, SEM, XRF, Hardness Tester, Welding, Brazing, Tribological testing, NDT

  • Project Management experience

  • Knowledge of MS Office, Statistical Tools and Methods, Equipment trouble

The newly renovated Sidney campus has 1M square feet of manufacturing floor with an additional 120k square feet of leading-edge lab facilities. This location is the headquarters for the air conditioning and cold chain businesses. Through our 30 years of scroll compressor expertise, our air conditioning related products help bring comfort and convenience in commercial, industrial and residential spaces. The cold chain business helps ensure that food safely and efficiently travels from farm to fork. Approximately 1600 employees work in Sidney, who all support a multitude of business functions.
