About the Job
Working Title:Extension Educator, Master Gardener Volunteer Program Appointment:Full-time, Assistant Extension Professor (9623), P&A Location:Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, Chaska, MN Salary:Estimated starting salary range, $60,000-$70,000/annually; Depending on qualifications Extension Area:Department of Agriculture and Natural Resource Systems (ANR) Apply By:March 31,2024 ABOUT THIS POSITION Each year, 3,700 Extension Master Gardener Volunteers reach 150,000 Minnesotans with research-based information about growing plants.Priority topics include local food, pollinators, biodiversity, climate responsiveness, nearby nature, horticulture skills and clean water.The role of Extension Educator for the Master Gardener team has two main areas of work.First, to create, distribute and evaluate research and best practice-based educational experiences to prepare volunteers to bring the priority topics to Minnesotans. Second, to vision, develop, distribute and evaluate educational tools for Master Gardener volunteers to use when engaging with the public. Tools include walk-by learning interpretive signs, print materials, tech-based tools and other emerging public focused formats. Responsibilities Create, implement, maintain and evaluate education experiences for Master Gardener volunteers which include but are not limited to: Create, distribute and evaluate educational tools across the Continuum of Learning for Master Gardener volunteers to engage with Minnesotans across the state. Tool formats include online information, walk-by learning interpretive signs, print materials, tech-based tools and other emerging public focused formats. Actively participate in Master Gardener leadership team activities including ongoing check-in meetings, team projects, and providing input into the strategic operation and direction of the program and serve on committees as needed. Develop and sustain working relationships with content area experts that will validate that educational materials accurately reflect current research and best practices. Throughout this work, collaborate with new, diverse, and historically underserved audiences to develop programs that are customized to the needs of different cultural communities. BENEFITS/SALARY/APPOINTMENT Extension Educator (job code 9623) positions have annual University academic professional appointments and Extension academic rank. Promotion in Extension academic rank is required and is contingent upon accomplishments as an Extension Educator. Estimated salary range for this position is $60,000 to $70,000, commensurate with qualifications and previous experience. Qualifications
Required Qualifications: Master's degree in Horticulture, plant science, education or closely related field Experience designing, writing, delivering and evaluating science and/or best practice based educational programs in horticulture, plant science, education or related field Strong written communication, oral communication and presentation skills. Demonstrated subject matter expertise in one or more Master Gardener priority topics: local food, pollinators, biodiversity, climate responsiveness, nearby nature, horticulture skills and clean water. A proven ability to develop and sustain working relationships with diverse stakeholder groups such as the gardening public, volunteers, community organizations and other relevant groups including those that may have diverse missions, goals, and backgrounds. Preferred Qualifications: Two (2) or more years of professional work experience relevant to creating curriculum / learning modules for adult learners Advanced skills using technology based platform(s) for educational programming such as canvas, moodle, or others Experience creating educational videos Experience with photography and photo editing software Additional Requirements: Valid driver's license and own means of transportation with required liability insurance, to be utilized for travel to workshops and transporting materials and supplies to events; the need to transport other people/employees may occur. Overnight travel across Minnesota will be required an average of 3-4 times per year for 1-2 nights per trip. When not in the assigned office location, employees must be reachable with a number that number will be published in the Extension staff directory. Ability to maintain a flexible work schedule, including occasional evening or weekend work. Must have reliable internet if/when working outside of assigned office location. Must be able to travel within the designated communities and provide in-person programming. Ability to work on a computer for long periods of time. Working ability to perform tasks involving frequent repetitive motions, prolonged sitting, standing, bending, twisting, lifting, and carrying 20 pounds frequently, with occasional exertion of up to thirty pounds of force. Work at times requires pushing, pulling, lifting and related as part of set up and take down as well as moving and transporting of presentation locations, materials, equipment and related. This position is not eligible for employment visa sponsorship.
